What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;

Dire Straits. On The Night. On CD from 1993. First listen. If you've ever wondered how Dire Straits would sound live with a dose of pedal steel guitar this would be your chance. Pretty good, though I prefer "Alchemy" for performance, arena ambience, and energy supplied by the audience.
Borders Nick posted:First run for this which arrived a couple of days ago. Have a few of their other albums - so far, more mellow in comparison. CD rip.
Give it time...It is wonderful.

John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits. Words & Music. On 2 CD from 2004. If you want to hear a worthy compilation of Mellencamp's music through 2004 this one hits the mark - 37 songs and I like that they're not in chronological order. On the other hand it's loudness mastered and doesn't do justice to the excellent SQ on his pre-2000 releases. Still, for something to play in the car or on a garage boombox it works well for me.

Hopefully Bert will forgive me if I say this is a very Schurinkian start to day off ![]()

Chris - you won't be disappointed- it's a cracker. N.

As for why anyone might be interested, I remember a while ago someone on here said they were enjoying a previous release, and this one just came out within the past few days.
Played a show with them last night in Birmingham, sounded great to me.

I bought their mini EP (precious Bones) last year on Bandcamp and I see this new full album has just been released so I've stuck it into my wishlist there pending a listen before pulling the trigger. Good heavy female fronted doom metal.

A change of tack toward more melody in Opeth's sound and none the worse for it, very enjoyable.

This is the first time I have heard Toussaint's work. Nice piano to start off the day.

"Summertime" really stands out so far. Very enjoyable.
Nice series. On the Alan Toussaint, try to listen to his previous one, The Bright Mississippi. I prefer it, both its magisterial playing and the sound quality. Definitely one of my favourite discs.

+1 I whole heartedly agree with that James.

Lovely swirling soundscapes and a cracking recording too.
Very John Martyn like in both vocal style and the use of an Echoplex on this album.

From 1992.

Marion Verbruggen is one of the world's leading soloists on the recorder. Her discography ranges from 17th-century Spanish songs and theatre music to her own transcriptions of the cello suites by J.S. Bach. She is an ardent advocate of contemporary music.

As iTunes is temporarily not available due to a self inflicted wound. I have been trolling through my various saved music files to find amongst others:-
Peter Gabriel - 3 and 4, 24/96
Solas - Edge of Silence, 16/44
Via Cog/DacMagic/iMac

Kurt Vile - "Wakin' On A Pretty Daze" (2013)

2014 - Original vinyl...
Inspired by Jeff's post.
Ancient vinyl:

Why? I came across his name today at work and was reminded of this album.

Second impression is that while Netrebko's voice has grown darker it isn't as lush as I would like; she rather efficiently glides through this music without leaving much of an impression. It's pretty good, but not more than that. The recording is disappointingly opaque on the voice. This music already soungs great in a mediocre performance, which this isn't, but it isn't as good as it can be - I wasn't swept away.
In addition, her husband tenor, in some of the selections, sounds like a comprimario and badly miscast as dramatic lead.
But it was a tough day at work - really hoping that my third impression is more positive...
cheers,
EJ
