2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
On CD:-
Streaming mp3s waiting for the cd to come from amazon:
for fans of Elbow - it's very good!
Borders Nick posted:Companion album to Ode - via Tidal - very good. Another for the wish list.
One of my favorite ones...
Bob Dylan "Tempest"
Original vinyl..
A cool but compelling performance of Granados' Goyescas, by Dutch pianist Joop Celis. To get to know the greatest Spanish work for solo piano, Alicia de Larrocha (on EMI, Decca or RCA) remains essential listening but over the last few months this has become my most played recording.
EJ
Alex Cornish "No Shore"
Delicate playing....
On vinyl.
Santana's Greatest Hits. On original Columbia vinyl from 1974. My one and only CS album. A nice compilation although couple of tracks seem heavily bass boosted.
Horigome/Simonov/Royal Philharmonic: Bruch Violin Concerto No.1 1996 recording
New to me Japanese violin player.
Horigome’s strength lies in voicing of gentle sweet nature of the tune. She gives a nice lyrical breathing quality in Andante. Much fluid in register going up and down than Suk, too. One of more passionate performance which she stretches to almost 10 min. Would have liked to hear more body and guts in her double and triple stops, tho.. Too polished and missing the earthy feel albeit beautifully done. Lively and dynamic orchestra 3rd movement intro brings in a sunny happy fiddle.
BigH47 posted:Hiatt is another artist I missed over the years. Thanks ewemon.
If you like those two then you are going to like a lot of Hiatt's albums as he has made very few bad albums. Personally I wasn't that keen on anything before the Bring on the Family album.
Little/Handley/Royal Liverpool Philharmonic: Bruch Violin Concerto No.1 1989 recording
Even more civilised lead-footed orchestra than RPO. She applies more textures and a slight rubato on certain notes, 1st movement seems to drag on. I lost interest quickly before the tune is over. Adagio is missing the sweet quality and high note sounds too peaky rather than connected to the rest of the music. Whisper quiet and she slows down a bit for the drama but it's not doing a darn thing to give the tune a human quality. Finale is supposed to be 'energico'!. Not enough dynamics or energy. This is one schoolmarmy performance.
I got to liven things up after the snoozer Bruch. Soundtrack of my life 10 years ago. Energy filled groovy down tempo tune. Jersey Street: 'Step into the Light':
Rolling Stones. Metamorphosis. On ABKCO vinyl from 1975. Outtakes and demos, etc., surreptitiously released by Allen Klein after the band parted ways with him. As the cover indicates it's an oddity of an album and probably only loosely associated with The Stones as a band, but one that I quite enjoy.
Another morning with Paul Lewis....

My first listen to this one.
Internal Furniture is the ideal soundtrack for H.P. Lovecraft’s work, a body of music that's best consumed in the flickering of candlelight, late at night via a good pair of headphones."
Just my 1st listen on Bandcamp - but highly recommended.....lyrical music...
A great debut album but so different from what was to come.
Original vinyl...

Time for a bit of goth rock mixed nicely with some psychedelia.
