2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

Nils new album 'Bouyancy' released earlier this month

on my second very enjoyable listen. Modernist jazz/fusion with haunting rasping trumpet, dynamic drumming & a guitar sliding here and there... much of the composition in the atmospherical style of Pink Floyd (wywh)

Very Recommended, my only complaint it it's only 20 minutes a side, i want more! : )

The free download comes with a extra track but i haven't heard it yet...

Debs

Listening now, Debs. After initial "Floydesque" doubts, this is growing on me more, every track I hear. Some very clever rhythms going on.

Klyde,

do you have any other albums by Nils Petter Movlær?

My one and only other NPM album is Switch, which is also top drawer and on vinyl; however using 3 sides of a double album which is somewhat of a shortchange imo, having a picture to look at on side 4 is little consolation. Other NPM albums on vinyl seem rare or expensive. Buoyancy is presently a very affordable treat - while the price holds very reasonable.

I wish they'd do a NPM box-set of CDs, lots of calm delicate moments that would lend itself well for the CD format, not to mention better on the bank balance. Currently i'm surveying the NPM album list on individual CDs, going by the reviews on Amazon [should we really?] Baboon Moon is the one to go for, so i've just placed an order : )

Debs

Hi Debs, I don't have any NPM on LP or CD but there are 12 of his albums on Tidal, I suspect the remainder are on ECM or other labels, must check this out, as I'm becoming a fan, already

NPM albums on Tidal- Buoyancy, ER, Streamer(Live), Re-vision, Switch, 1/1, Baboon Moon, Hamanda, Remakes, Recoloured- The Remix Album, and NP3. So it's Baboon Moon upnext, followed by Switch. I'll read the Amazon review afterwards. Amazon reviews can be source of amusement, anything from, "thanks for a quick delivery", to very concise multi paragraph epics! Perhaps we could all make an effort to say more about the music, when replying to this thread? (Flac jacket going on!)

Phil.

I didn't have anything with McCoy Tyner as leader (he was a regular pianist with John Coltrane), but saw this ridiculously cheap on a well known website and thought I'd give it a go. I have to say it is absolutely wonderful! Thoroughly recommended. This RVG remastered version is excellent.

I've not played this for a while: it's an excellent album. Jim Mullen has a very soft guitar sound because he plucks the strings with his thumb, rather than a plectrum. It's really rather beguiling.

Fancied a bit of old DS before cooking dinner.

Lute music written some six hundred years ago, a hundred years before Dowland, and entertaining from start to finish. Amazing...

Cheers

His finest solo album IMHO

A+ | Transcoded DSD

(1992)

Because its a great early progressive metal album that showcases the musicianship of each and all of the band members.

I got this recently, having seen it on here (I think) and it's really very good indeed. A trio of sax, piano and bass, which you don't hear that often, with great interplay between the musicians. Whoever recommended it - thanks!

I never really got on with The Absence (growing on me very slowly) so this album was a welcome return to form.

Love this talented woman.

This is a very good album from the wonderful Martin Carthy. The first track is particularly jolly - look at the title.

Excellent shout Clive.  Tidal'd this and promptly picked one up for £2.99.

I'm a huge fan of Ms G and this album is in my view her best. I too was initially rather cool on The Absence but found it is worth preserving with, James.

All of Tyner's albums are worth a listen IMO, and there are lots of them!

I am particularly fond of "Sahara" as well as several of his Milestone recordings ("Horizon" is a good example).  Check out his discography at Allmusic.com.
