What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

A nice quiet one to end the day...

A local Vancouver girl with whom I am not familiar. I just picked this up your recommendation.
David Bowie, Hunky Dory, Flac via Audirvana/Hugo, no reason needed, it's just brilliant

Haskil/Dixon/RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester : Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4 1954 recording
Contrasting to her Mozart work also featured in the same CD, her G Major Beethoven Concerto is a bit uneven. This is a live recording and that there are a few slipped keys in outer movements but by far the ultra somber 2nd movement with whispering piano saves the day. Feeling of total resignation and defeat cut short by the brash orchestra. This is a pretty intense performance by Haskil.
Hangin' with the Queen of Soul this evening...
And just ordered that Grover Live from Amazon after doing some further investigation - thanks Tony!
Gould/Bernstein/NYP: Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4 1961 recording
I get a kick out of Gould humming along but this is pretty *straight* playing for him. Lenny's usual heavy schmultz is present. Rhythmic this is not.
Very upfront and structrued. An odd little cadenza. I bet he was imaging this is how Beethoven played. ( impulsive and tremendous pace ) Desolate 2nd movement reminds me of gray urban cold windy winter. Altho it feels too over laboued. Overall this is an awkward and somewhat contrived lacking lyricism and spontaneity.
George Harrison. Eponymous eighth album on original vinyl from 1979. "All Things Must Pass" was an epic, but musically this might be Harrison's most accomplished album.
Kempff/Leitner/Berliner: Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4 1961 recording
This is more of my ideal.
It is so apparent that how many of Beethoven interpretations are artificial and cardboard like. Kempff's style is not brash or overtly bravura yet the music is so expressive to my ears. He pays attention to details yet never gets fussy or go overboard with flourishes. Beautiful simple lyricism with sweeping gliding keyboards yet he adds subtle tensions and phrasing to create ebb and flow. As usual I love his own cadenza is brooding yet he never lose the sense of humor. Surprisingly modern melody and harmonics. His wonderful intuitive way of playing works well for Beethoven's tunes I think.
Brendel/Wallberg/Vienna Pro Musica Orchestra: Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4 1963 recording
Early Pre-Phillips Brendel is your usual *respectable* Beethoven with polished elegance.
Coming off from the Serkin/Toscanini set, this sounds so *normal* and gone is the sense of fun and adventure.
This is a lyrical performance but Brendel entirely detached emotionally.

(2012)
The second album from EFSS who play some very good modern Berlin School electronica.
The Doors. In Concert. On 2CD from 1991. Numerous albums of live Doors music are available; this is a nice distillation of the best of it. SQ and performances are consistently good throughout. Provides a real feel of Morrison as a performer and his interaction with the audience,, sloppy stuff omitted.
A Canuck friend of mine has been raving about this guy to me for years so got him to over some of this guys discs.
The above is his latest released which just came out on the 29th
Think this is his 7th album.

Great album! One of my favorite releases of 2014. But this John's a Mellencamp.
We would have also accepted Cougar
All you Mellencamp fans should seek out a cd entitled Live Rehearsals or Live Rehearsals 1992
It is John in the studio preparing for a tour and IMHO is well worth getting.
I also have official recordings from the tour and wish he would release a Live album from that era as the band were on fire on certain nights.
It pops up on a well known auction site every now and again

Thanks for the heads up Joe, I have just snaffled this for £1.98. The DR looks impressive across both CDs.

Quad 33,
deep groove red unboxed - you got me googling around with this term. Sought after pressings for the Stones and others I see. I get the deep groove pressing and red label part, but what does 'unboxed' refer to? I see used LPs selling as 'unboxed' on ebay.

My first Doors Live album was Absolutley Live which has now become a part of the album above along with another batch of live songs.

Thanks ewe. Just discog'd it - an unofficial release from Italy in 1992 as you say. $30 for the CD at the usual outlets, but being this is an 'unofficial' release is it fair game to pinch a torrent file and burn it?
I finally saw Mellencamp live last July and recently watched some Farm Aid footage of him. Great performer in concert, but the fags are taking a toll on his already gravelly voice. How much more phlegm will his stalwarts accept?

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do Steve. Morrison covering Morrison (Gloria) is one of the highlights of the album.
Angela Hewitt, with Scarlatti..., I like it while it's still my first serious listening session....
House to myself for a while today so...Volume up!
