What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 01 January 2016
2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;

Sawallisch' Meistersinger is one of the opera's most convincing recordings, recorded in long takes with an experienced cast and orchestra. Bernd Weikl was, unfortunately, no longer in prime voice and his monologues aren't exactly riveting listening (on records, I personally feel nobody tops Fischer-Dieskau in his underrated recording with Jochum). The rest of the cast, including a young Ben Heppner and the late Deon van der Walt as a very sympathetic David, are excellent. Sawallisch keeps things bubbly enough and does not overplay the nationalistic elements.
Cheers
EJ

Well, I had to, having commented earlier on james n's playing of it.

Thanks for the heads up to this Tony, enjoying it alot.

Wa-Do-Dem by Eek-a-Mouse. A great Greensleeves album from the early 80s.

2016 - Tidal...
Pure, simple and laid back British jazz. Nice!

On vinyl...

Joe Purdy.

Elvis, Reggae and Zep all rolled into one. Nutters.
Love this LP. Had it since it was released and listen to it regularly. Glad to see someone has it as well, because it seems to be a little known gem.
Great stuff.

Obviously a man of discerning taste, Nigel. Let's keep it our secret.![]()

Sorry to post this one again but it's really getting under my skin (in a good way). Well worth a spin if you have any leaning towards Americana. Lovely harmonies & stripped back production.
Nick, If you like stripped back country/bluegrass like Mandolin Orange, then you might like the following (Nickel Creek, Reasons Why for those with seeing difficulties):
I just think the songwriting, musicianship, vocals and production are top notch. Great stuff to simply relax to.
It is also on Tidal.
Nigel - yes it's been on my Tidal playlist for some time - ought to give it another run soon. Cheers N.
Cat Stevens - Teaser and the Firecat. A classic - sounding superb - picked up for pennies on at usual place. CD rip

Tony - I had been really looking forward to this release earlier in the year, as I play their previous two albums a lot - but I've found it a bit too "tricksy" in general. Although there are some very nice moments on it, notably "it could have been a simple goodbye" which I think is outstanding. Perhaps it'll grow on me. N.
Sinikka Langeland - The Magical Forest. An excellent new ECM album.
Amanda Shires - My Piece of Land. More stripped back Americana, from Jason Isbells (ex drive-by truckers) other half. Been giving this a few runs recently. (2016) Tidal

Can I suggest we have a whip round for HH so he can top up his photobucket ? ![]()
I'm quite enjoying the freedom of just typing the album titles, and anyway it's a lot more useful for our blind and partially sighted friends, who are struggling with the album covers, particuarly when people post covers with no titles and assume everyone will know what they are. I think with Photobucket you get a monthly upload allowance, which I seem to have reached.

Nick, that's what I meant by "laid back". It's more of a dinner jazz album but still very much enjoyable. I agree "It could have..." is the best track on the album.

Yes indeed - I've been typing in titles recently also for the same reason after seeing the issue pointed out on a couple of other threads.

Tigran Hamasyan - Atmosphères.
Had a friend over and gave the system a good workout.... started with this...

Then went through a wide variety under which Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, Neil Cowley, Radio Head, Rainbow, Deep Puple, Michael Wolny, Anna Nettebko.......
it was a fun night and the system preformed as it should...
Now cooling down before going to sleep..
