What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;

After listening (last night and first thing this morning) to the rather heavy, excellent and thought provoking "You Want It Darker" its time for something lighter. This was Johannes Schmoelling's first extensive tour with the band which started in Kiel Germany on October 11th and ended on 22nd November 1980 in Santa Monica U.S.A.

Very early 'Purple, this one rather influenced by U.S. West Coast psychedelic rock, an underrated album of theirs with no screaming ![]()
Elbow - The seldom seen kid
Today I'm throwing those curtains wide.

Following HH's excellent shout yesterday. Four album download from Qobuz for £6.70 ish must be the bargain of the year. Lovely stuff.

Great album from Tidal...

Thanks Dave for the recommendation (Horace Andy and Sound Iration In Dub) - arrived today so looking forward to having a listen to these later once we've attacked the growing pile of leaves in the garden !

Ah, I'm glad you found it and are enjoying it. I played the first disc last night and was most impressed. John Taylor was such a wonderful pianist.
I'm very much enjoying this, another recent Forum recommendation, bought cheaply on cd.

Hard to believe this superlative recording is sixty years old. A gentle lead into the weekend after a great late night with my old Prof. Far too much Rioja and Spanish brandy but great food and conversation.

I found a copy of this LP which I'd recorded onto audio cassette to play in my last car (which had both CD and cassette replay equipment - why don't they still do that, since cassette sounds so much better?). Now playing whilst doing Saturday morning stuff.
Nifty guitar work with some cheesy 60's organ.

Hi James,
I'm guessing you Tidalised these two before deciding to buy, so I'm glad you liked them.........I've been plugging the Sound Iration one for ever.
Best you get the leaves done first though, before a listen, as, the other way round, it'd be "Nah, the leaves can wait till tomorrow" ![]()

Having blown away some cobwebs I'm in full immersion mode with this stellar production up to eleven.

Because I haven't listened to this in years and Tony 2011 reminded me of it the other day, oh, and it happens to be available on Tidal
.

Julia Holter - Loud CIty Song
Trying the back catalogue having previously only listened to the brilliant "Have You In My Wilderness". Qobuz has got some decent discounts on Domino label Hi Res at the moment, including a number from Julia Holter.
Russian Cello Sonatas:

Music of Borodin, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov performed by Alexaxander Chaushian (cello) and Yegnev Sudbin (piano). Excellent playing and sound from the BIS label. The soundtrack is of the two musicians performing the Frank Sonata in A major.

10cc - Sheet Music
Classic 10cc

1974 - Original vinyl...
The last proper album before they hit the big commercial road and I lost interest in anything they have done since.

This CD is a lot of fun... ![]()

Brilliant album and exemplary recording. Try 'Willow' to hear a big open soundstage.
Not one filler track.

Macy Gray - On How Life Is.
Wee bit of quality R 'n B to get the afternoon going.
One of the all time smashing debut albums?

That's a shame. Personally I think they remained a great progressive band until Steve Hackett left, which means I think 'A Trick of the Tail' and 'Wind and Wuthering' are also very good. You might enjoy Steve Hackett's Genesis revisited albums of which I would especially recommend the live Hammersmith album.
Black Sabbath, The Mob Rules, one of my fave Sabbath albums. A quick blast before I head into Liverpool to watch the match with friends. Orinal vinyl
Cage The Elephant- Thank You Happy Birthday

Phil Collins - Face Value deluxe edition.
Why?

Not fashionable to admit to liking Phil, but his "Facehugger" drum sound takes some beating.............see what I did there? ![]()
