What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;

Kevin-W,
A great run of shows, at a very good time for the Dead - perhaps one of their last most powerful times as a band. Also, as a bonus, these shows happened about 2 miles from my parents' house.
The live Dead I was listening to was the last "Dave's Picks" release (#16) - Springfield, MA from 1973. And man does it sound big, full, and "live" on my system these days as I upgraded quite a few pieces in 2015.
I have been a subscriber to the "Dave's Picks" series for 3 years now. It's quite a good deal. Send them $99 in November or so of any year and then 4 times in the next calendar year a 3 cd set shows up in your mail just like that. I am currently waiting to receive #17 which I see by my email I am due to receive any day now.
So much good GD music out there. What a treat.

One of my favourite 'Floyds, playing because the wind sounds on the opening track are rather like what is happening outside the house at the moment...
Steve_S,
Yes indeed. Some great stuff on "Meddle." The other day I pulled out my vinyl copy of "Obscured by Clouds" the great Floyd soundtrack to the film "The Valley." I love the songs and the flow on that album.
As my friends and I used to say, way back in the day - "give us this day our daily Floyd."

Curved Air's third and last but one decent album, unfortunately as so often happens within bands, ongoing internal strife led to constant break ups and personnel changes to the detriment of the music. Sonja Kristina however remained and is still there today.
This picture of conductor Pablo Heras-Casado documents what he was thinking when Harmonia Mundi asked him to do a record of Mendelssohn's most popular popular works, with an orchestra that specialises in baroque music. Either that or he's practicing for a shaving commercial...
Notwithstanding all that, this turned out to be an excellent disc - with particularly the Scottish benefiting from a plangent tone that lifts the music to new levels. Heras-Casado plays the climaxes for all their worth despite, or perhaps thanks to, the limited, focused forces of the super agile Freiburger Barockorchester.
So, somewhat unexpectedly: highest recommendation!
Cheers

This is one side of Finland. Glad you liked it. There is more if you're interested – this is their 13th album.
Osprey. I was aware that they had done several albums but not 13! Is this typical? Are there other albums that you would suggest that I investigate?

You could try this one:
Their third album named "Oi Dai" which if I remeber correctly was at the time (1991/94) considered as their international break through.

Yes Gary, I've heard that DP 17 is an absolute stonker. Must think about subscribing...
As they say, once you start listening to the Dead, you can't stop... three CDs and a DVD from a great gig in '72:

Unfortunately the subscription is not such a good deal outside the US as you don't get the free postage. I have always bought the DP and DaP series individually, which means I pass on a few - I am not really interested in adding any more post 78 concerts to the many I have. However I did get the Nassau 90 set which is excellent! If you want to get the DaPs it's best to get on the GD email list so you get immediate notification and can order straightaway if you want it. It's generally thought that eBayers are snaffling the most popular releases for profiteering as they are ltd editions. I too am currently awaiting DaP17.
Original vinyl...
Very pleasant...
An album I've had for a long time. A good recording of a live performance. The two stand-out songs for me are Wonderful Tonight, which is quite emotional, and Edge of Darkness.

1st run, will not be able to finish it today. I am not a fan of her, but got attracted by the concept of the album. So let's see if I am again dissapointed or if it's a pleasant surprise...

Thanks Osprey. I will seek it out.

Isabelle Faust's second take on Beethoven with Abbado is a warm, touching performance that never rushes and never slackens the pace. Faust, especially in the slow, soft, larghetto, is commanding.
EJ
One of Patricia Kopatchinskaja's most conventional recordings (certainly she is much better behaved here than in her new recording of the Tchaikovsky) has in her a unique soloist and in Herreweghe a less imaginative Beethoven conductor than Abbado. The performance takes its time to warm up but develops into a good if uneven document.
Cheers
