What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

Kevin-W,
A great run of shows, at a very good time for the Dead - perhaps one of their last most powerful times as a band. Also, as a bonus, these shows happened about 2 miles from my parents' house.
The live Dead I was listening to was the last "Dave's Picks" release (#16) - Springfield, MA from 1973. And man does it sound big, full, and "live" on my system these days as I upgraded quite a few pieces in 2015.
I have been a subscriber to the "Dave's Picks" series for 3 years now. It's quite a good deal. Send them $99 in November or so of any year and then 4 times in the next calendar year a 3 cd set shows up in your mail just like that. I am currently waiting to receive #17 which I see by my email I am due to receive any day now.
So much good GD music out there. What a treat.
Gary
Yes Gary, I've heard that DP 17 is an absolute stonker. Must think about subscribing...
Unfortunately the subscription is not such a good deal outside the US as you don't get the free postage. I have always bought the DP and DaP series individually, which means I pass on a few - I am not really interested in adding any more post 78 concerts to the many I have. However I did get the Nassau 90 set which is excellent! If you want to get the DaPs it's best to get on the GD email list so you get immediate notification and can order straightaway if you want it. It's generally thought that eBayers are snaffling the most popular releases for profiteering as they are ltd editions. I too am currently awaiting DaP17.
Hey Cdb,
Glad to know of yet another Dead fan on this site. I get it about not getting the free postage outside the US. I do enjoy that - it's one of the things that kicks it into the this is a good value category for me. That and the fact that a few years ago I got shut out of one release I wanted because I waited too many days to order it. Plus, as I said in one of my earlier posts - I love the "set it and forget it" quality of handling it once and not having to deal with it again for another year. I can not say I totally agree with all their choices for release but I am willing to take my chances with it for the subscription nature of it. I have been listening to Dead music on whatever stereo system I have had for many years now. Originally the live shows we got access to were on cassette tape, then DAT's, etc. So to have cd's coming which I can play on a good Naim system... well let's just say I can get closer to creating the sound of a live show in my living room these days. Listening to the first set of Dave's Picks #16 yesterday was awesome - to hear what each musician is doing, how they are communicating and getting to hear deeper into the music - what a pleasure. Now if they would just release the shows that I most want to hear - including a lot of the shows I was at, that would be good. I wonder if anyone will call me for my input??? :

Pacifying pace.
The Best Of George Harrison. On CD from 1976. Half Beatles and half solo tracks, its a spotty, commercial sampling of Harrison's popular hits to that time. I give it a rare listen.
Buddy Holly. The Definitive Collection. On CD from 2006. I needed a Buddy fix this evening. Wednesday will mark 57 years since his death, along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. So many old rockers dying lately, but what a true tragedy to have lost Buddy at only 22 and Ritchie at a mere 17 years-old.

Some say that this was in parts their first steps toward a more commercial sound, I think it sounds pretty good with some memorable tracks on it.
During workout, brings back old memories...
Quite funny I ended with water yesterday evening and will now continue with water...

An older work by Cousin Silas now re-released on the weareallghosts label. The label owner Thomas Mathie says of it "It is an amazing piece, almost 80 minutes in length yet totally engaging. It is delicate and thoughtful, reminiscent (to me at least) of Brian Eno’s Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks; with sparing use of guitar and other miscellaneous flourishes."
Thanks to Harty601.

Hi Gary
I have been listening to the Dead since the late 60s but it has been a bit of an odd experience doing so in the UK. They really didn't play live here very much although I have seen them when possible - the first occasion being in 1970. Given the the almost parallel development of their playing in concert and on record it wasn't easy to track what they were up to, especially as they weren't covered much in the UK music press. By 1972 when I next saw them on the famous European tour, their playing live was very different, not to mention that there was a batch of unheard new songs. Not only is it great to hear them on a good hifi system, as you say, I am constantly amazed by being able to listen to these time capsules from decades ago.

Sometimes nothing but a bit of Yello's quirkiness will do.

A lovely old classic that I like to roll out now and again
Newly downloaded today, following a great review in The Guardian. Part improvised, part composed, sounding very good on the first listen. It's one of those records to really listen to and get immersed in.

Clive,
Awesome, it is nice to connect with another fan from across the pond. You began before me. I began seeing the Dead in the latter part of 1977 when I started college in the Northeast US. The beauty of that time and that place was that I got to see them live continuously from then right up until Garcia died in 95. I saw them when they were still a bit smaller of a phenomenon playing places of less than 10,000 people to the times when they were quite popular and were playing in massive stadiums. All in all I got to see them multiple times per year over 18 years. Lots of fantastic times and unforgettable memories. And while, as you say, they changed a lot from the late 60's as they moved into the 70's I still think of their 72 - 73 period as another one of their best periods. The Europe '72 tour would have been awesome to see. Yes, I like the way you phrased that - "these time capsules from decades ago." This morning I am listening to Dick's Picks #28 from Lincoln, Nebraska and Salt Lake City, Utah from early '73. Very nice indeed. I just love how much availability to their music we have these days, between the web, cd's being put out by the band's organization, LP's, etc. A lot different then my early days when a live tape of a concert was rare gold indeed.
All my best,
Gary

Thought it would be too free for me, I will give it a try through Tidal if available. Thanks for the tip.
Nice evening music - while it's quite busy with the horns etc...

I hate ECM's way of doing base. Standard high prices, no offering to streaming providers (also Qobuz offers only snippets), but they have some great music....so I every now and then force myself to go there.....
Act is from that perspective much more open.
There is a lot to like. While it's not as a great album as the one of Luke Howard which I recommended. But still recomended to jazz lovers...
