2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;

I've been listening to Leonard Cohen for nearly 40 years now .. a fabulous entertainer and poet .. this isn't his best album but tonight it's just right.
Any recommendations where to start with Lenard Cohen?
Absolutely .. start at the beginning .. "Songs of Leonard Cohen" 1967 .. then work your way forward, slowly, take your time, there aren't going to be any more.

I've been on a bit of a Willie Dixon jag of late .. this particular album with Memphis Slim is excellent .. both of these performers are giants in the Blues arena.

Paul, if you are totally new to him then you could do worse than starting with something like "Popular Problems" (2014) then have a listen to his last and just released album "You Want It Darker" if you get along with those then why not just work your way through his back catalogue chronologically? You can find it here https://www.discogs.com/search...+cohen+&type=all
Then if you have access to Tidal or similar you can listen to all his work (chronologically). Or do as I did a few years ago and buy his 11 CD box set which is still available new for less than £24 which is outstanding value, well recorded and good SQ. His work can be rather dark so I have to be in the right mood to take on some of it but the quality is never in question.

You can't go wrong with any Nat KC Bert.
Soul Station - Hank Moblet et al
Jazz at 33 1/3 series.
This whole vinyl series is new to me since I was never really "into" jazz.
Great SQ and great music although Art Blakey is a bit further back in the mix than I would like
... great opportunity missed here for someduetting between sax and piano
... but then it is Hank's album ![]()

Back at you with this one.
David Rodigan - Original Gangster. ![]()
A Dancehall / Reggae mix from David Rodigan, UK champion DJ of all things reggae / dancehall.
Frank Zappa - Chicago '78
Streamed from Qobuz. A Vaulternative release of the complete evening concert. It's the Zappa/Colaiuta/Willis/Mann/Wolf/Mars/Walley/Barrow line-up, so is tight and light on its feet, playing mostly shorter melodic material with a few exceptions (the extended Don't Eat The Yellow Snow for example) and it features some really great soloing from FZ. The sound quality is very, very good.

Thanks Nick I'll see if I can find that on Tidal.

Elliott Smith - "Roman Candle" (1995)
Wolf People - Ruins
Hmmm. Loved Fain, their last one, to death so was looking forward a great deal to this one. Playing bits on the computer it had seemed OK, but streaming it from Qobuz I have two issues - firstly as a whole it doesn't have such good tunes as Fain. Good, but not as good. Secondly, I hate the production - compressed and EQed into the upper mid-range such the subtleties and details are hashed into a blend and the drummer gets a raw deal (as is the bassist where he isn't fuzzed).
Maybe I'm a grump tonight and further listens will improve my opinion, but at the moment colour me disappointed.

Streaming Qobuz.

One of my all-time favourite albums. Quite magical IMO.
From the sublime to ...
previously listening to Hank Mobley jazz from 1960
... now on original 1974 vinyl
Max Boyce - Live at Treorchy
humour and pathos with a great voice but only really accessible to rugby listeners and those who know a little about Welsh culture.
Huge grin on my face,
Allan
Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden - Last Dance
With a cold one, after work in the quiet of the evening.

Dusty Springfield - A Very Fine Love.
Dusty's final album, recorded in Nashville, at which point she was already very ill....................one of the best, from one of UK's finest singers, IMHO.

Julia Stone - "The Memory Machine" (2010)

Streaming Qobuz.
Manu katche, Neighbourhood....
