What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

Yaz. Upstairs At Eric's (1982). On CD from 1987. AKA Yazoo in the UK. Another of my wife's CDs that I'm certain has been sitting unplayed for decades. Did my due diligence by giving it a stalwart full listen, but its headed unequivocally for the discard pile.

That's a wonderful album, as is the follow up, You and Me Both. I bought it when it came out and have loved it since. It's odd they were called Yaz in the US.

Roger Waters. Amused To Death. On original CD from 1992. Imagine if every CD was produced/mastered to this level of SQ (the clarity, soundstage, imaging). There may have been no loudness wars, MP3's, desire for hi-res, streaming, or vinyl revival. By all accounts the remaster is even better, but I'm smitten with the original in all its glory, and content to sit pat.

Something to pleasantly distract me from the rain and which an Amazonian describes very well:

"Two generations of guitarists merge on this cleverly-titled album, with former Dire Straits virtuoso Mark Knopfler taking time off from scoring movies to join Chet Atkins, one of the fathers of electric guitar pickin'. And there's some mighty fine country pickin' on display here, with the duo joined by some of Nashville's all-time finest players, including the late, great Floyd Cramer, Mark O'Connor, Larry Londin, Vince Gill and Steve Wariner. The material ranges from choice country covers (Doc Watson's "Poor Boy Blues" and Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams") to rock & roll ("Yakety Ax", a take on Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax"), jazz (Django Reinhardt's "Tears"), a Knopfler original and even the old standard "I'll See You in My Dreams". It sounds like they had fun, too!"  -- Bill Holdship

"This album never fails to put a smile on your face and I defy anyone to keep their hands, feet or head still whilst listening. The tracks range from layed back melodies perfect for a sunday morning, to feel good toe tappers that force you to join in. Unmistakeable Knopfler complimented by the renowned guitar 'picker' Atkins. The fun had by both Knopfler and Atkins shines through in every track .Especially worth a listen is "There'll be some changes made" (The verbal and musical jousting heard between the two 'competitors' in this track forms a kind of subtle duelling banjos for gentlemen)" - A.N.Other

Mono vinyl, for no good reason other than it's a good "up" record with which to start the working year...

Double CD, haven't listened to it in a while. Not sure if I liked it first time round so may be considering for a charity shop cull...

Recommended by Simon (slim88), this one finally arrived today and received a bit of a ripping. Excellent stuff, good prog and the best thing he has ever done as a solo artist. Thanks for the heads up.

If I needed to justify the monthly fee for Tidal I think I've just found it. The whole of 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' by Genesis. I absolutely adore the studio album, but was too young to have attended this concert tour. But I'm there now!

Just because sometimes I get a strong urge to hear her dulcet tones.

Firstly good old Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy on the anniversary of Phil Lynot's death followed by Sabbath with the Mob Rules, my favourite non Ozzy Sabbath album even if the production is a little dark and heavy. Both Flac via audirvana/Hugo

It's a modern day masterpiece and a fine album for him to retire on (if he does in fact retire now as stated).

Glad you like it Steve, I agree with Dayjay is really is a Masterpiece, Also gets better every time I listen to it. Worth spending some time getting to know the story behind the songs. Enjoy.

One of my favourites by Gazpacho and the first album that got me into their great Northern European Prog', playing the first CD of this double album.

Carmen Gomes Inc  "Thousand Shades of Blue"   DSD64 - but not native DSD,  originally recorded in PCM then remixed into DSD via an analogue tape.     This is a sublime mix of jazz, blues, soul with a hint of latin, its a beautiful, understated relaxing total pleasure.

I listened to multiple versions of Beethoven Piano Sonatas while re-tagging some stuff (not general but specific artwork, make some corrections etc). Francois Frederic Guy, a bit rough in my opinion, Mari - nice but gentle, Maurizio Pollini shows that he has lived this stuff a bit longer.

I have almost everything from Keith, but I decided to not buy this one....

Men at Work, Business As Usual. Bought this when it first came out at the age of around 17 and still enjoy a listen on occasion. Nice to hear a band proud of their heritage too.  Flac via audirvana/Hugo

Inspired by an earlier post, The Beatles, Revolver, so pleased I saw this post because I haven't listened to this for years.  Incredible song writing and great sq.  Flac via audirvana/Hugo
