What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
The Sisters Of Mercy, First And Last and Always, This felt like the obvious next album. 1992 digital re-mastered CD.
Volume 1 - Love Songs - from this wonderful box set. The reproduction quality is so good I sometimes feel as if Suzanne is here performed just for me

I'm not a fan of the Stones (Sorry !) but a review of this in the Telegraph at the weekend piqued my interest and i've got this album on order.

Love the homage to Howlin Wolf in the second track Commit a Crime.
james n posted:Getting a proper listen of this today on my portable setup. Just finished Act 1 and onto Act 2. Very enjoyable and it must have been a fantastic show for anyone lucky enough to get tickets. SQ, as others have noted, is rather bass heavy and it reminds me of a typical Kate Bush album recording (no bad thing really) - rather warm and laid back.
I have to say I am enjoying this. My daughter got tickets but I didn't. She was joyously overwhelmed by the spectacle and the music. I can hear why but actually apart from some crowd noise at different moments it is very contained and wonderfully recorded. KB does say that apart from one track it is without overdubs or rerecording. All the more impressive for that. A bit bass heavy as others have said but not a worry for me.

Just listened to Ride 'Em On Down, Hate To See You Go and Doom and Gloom and their are the best Stones tracks I have heard in decades. Looking forward to listening to the whole album in the next few days.

Tracks available on Tidal now but not the whole album yet.
I'm saving it for the weekend.

Not really listening to this at all, just felt the need to express my feelings over the result of our match against the Scousers tonight.
Any sympathetic album choices from my friends on the "what are you listening to" topic would be most welcome.
Ducks for cover .........sandbags up, tin hat on etc.
Marillion, Script For A Jester's Tear. An unbelievably good first album, I never get tired of this.
Why?
Like leaves we touch, we see
We will know the story
As Autumn calls we'll both remember
All those many years ago.
One of my two favorite Beach Boys albums, the other being Pet Sounds.
Great album, Hook. One of my favourites. What format?

Came home from work this evening to find that the vinyl box set had arrived; managed to get halfway through it tonight. Bringing back some nice memories already....
How's the SQ of your pressings? I heard some suffered of light warping and the recording lack a bit of "punch" in the mid range?
Still only half way through, sound quality is good if not outstanding and thankfully not noticed any issues with warping (but also read that seems to be a problem in a lot of cases). The quality of the box/ overall packaging is exceptional...apart from the cardboard inserts but that seems par for the course. It feels like a lot of care went into the making of this; for me somehow an honest representation of the show.

Hi Richard -
Am spinning the recent Analogue Productions vinyl reissue (AAPP 070). They did a really nice job - flat, quiet, with great dynamics.
ATB.

Am in an early 70's mood, so next up for spinning is one of my favorite Eno albums (Island ILPS 9351, US Version, 1975).

Thank you for sharing your experience so far. I Know KB's albums have always been generous on the bass side, from (and in particular) Lionheart to 50 Words for Snow but I cannot forgive badly pressed albums. Glad you're enjoying it though and you have been lucky with your pressings.
Think I have half a dozen different versions of the above show.
This forum has certainly widened my musical horizons .. this is not the kind of music I used to listen to at all. The album is superbly produced and there's a wonderful feeling about the whole experience .. No Hard Feelings is THE track on the album. Pop/Country/Folksy .. certainly new country for me .. excuse the pun.
What a delight after 10 days without any music. A recent arrival:

'....Leeds Lungs...' has to be up there as one of the best boots.

The most beautiful piano concerto ever written, at least until Brahms wrote his second concerto. I have too many different recordings, but I can confidently say that Paul Lewis and Daniel Harding, is already among my favorites. Lewis and the orchestra are by turns heroic and poetic, but don't overplay either side and ultimately turn in a performance that just sounds right. There are more performances that get this right (thinking of Ashkenazy / Haitink and Kovacevich / Sawallisch) but I don't think the work has ever been recorded so beautifully as here - Harmonia Mundi have pulled off a real stunt.
I have the high-res download but now listening to the CD, which sounds about as good.
Cheers
EJ
