What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
EJS posted:The most beautiful piano concerto ever written, at least until Brahms wrote his second concerto. I have too many different recordings, but I can confidently say that Paul Lewis and Daniel Harding, is already among my favorites. Lewis and the orchestra are by turns heroic and poetic, but don't overplay either side and ultimately turn in a performance that just sounds right. There are more performances that get this right (thinking of Ashkenazy / Haitink and Kovacevich / Sawallisch) but I don't think the work has ever been recorded so beautifully as here - Harmonia Mundi have pulled off a real stunt.
I have the high-res download but now listening to the CD, which sounds about as good.

I share your appreciation for this one. I haven't done this kind of comparison as you to determine which is my all time favorite. For instance I don't know how the Pollini one would match up against this one...

I am amazed that I don't see more plays of this one on the forum. It should attract the people who once liked the Köln concert and also the ones which like the later solo work of Jarrett, do give it a listen.
As the Photobucket app seems to have conked out, for me at least, I'm trying Tinypic.
I really like this album, much more than a couple of others of hers that I've tried.

Great voice and choice, Nigel. I have Dreamer(2004) on CD and have not listened to it for ages. Thanks for the reminder. Enjoy it.

Best blues album I have heard this year. If only they had made this years ago. Brilliant album

John Willmott posted:This forum has certainly widened my musical horizons .. this is not the kind of music I used to listen to at all. The album is superbly produced and there's a wonderful feeling about the whole experience .. No Hard Feelings is THE track on the album. Pop/Country/Folksy .. certainly new country for me .. excuse the pun.
Ive seen this one posted a few times and I thought initially it was this one due to the very similar colour schemes ! Giving it a go on a Tidal now; As you say, an interesting mix of styles.
Might just give "Give 'Em enough Rope" a run for old time's sake ....

Great isn't it, I can't understand why I haven't played anything by him for so long, nice choice of music to have in your car.

Pollini's recorded both concertos three times. I like his second run with Abbado and the Berliners, mercurial and polished. His last recordings with Thielemann show him still in full command but with diminished resources, and a conductor with own ideas. Pretty exciting overall (so much better than Thielemann's approach to the Brahms symphonies), but recorded quality is only just above average.

Just because I felt like it, don't hear this too often...
