2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
Cdb posted:Steve J posted:Recorded Christmas Eve 1968 this live CD of Mandel, Jerry Garcia, Elvin Bishop et al comes as part of the Harvey Mandel Snake Box and is worth the price of the boxset alone. Superb. It's an album to just close your eyes and immerse into the music.
I think that settles it and I will have to get the box set. I have Cristo Redentor and Games Guitars Play on vinyl and have been wondering about getting the set. I was going to ask you about the live set, but you have done so anyhow, and if it has Garcia... I expect you have it, but Stand Back Here Comes Charlie Musselwhite has great Mandel playing and a different take on Cristo Redentor.
Cheers cdb. I don't have that album but will soon.
I saw him 1970 (twice), 71, missed the 72 tour but saw him again in 73, then met and had a drink with him at an Al Stewart after gig bash in 78 and saw him for the last time the following night. His first 4 gigs were electric.
I know that the Marquee gig in 72 was filmed and recorded but to my knowledge it hasn't been issued yet.
Roon brought me to JB Huto's version of "messin' with the kid" and into this great blues collection.

Gosh that takes me back. Used to have this one on vinyl back in '77 . I remember "Shake some action" by these guys very well. Ill have to check if it's on Tidal.
Yes ! What a great tune. Thanks for the reminder Matt
One of the many excellent albums I probably would not have come across but for this forum.

Always found this one difficult to get in to. Some tracks appeal this evening.
CD rip : WAV
James Bay "Chaos And The Calm"
The Barr Brothers "Sleeping Operator"
Queensryche, Empire, because Silent Lucidity plays and all is well with the world, Flac via Audirvana/Hugo
The New Basement Tapes "Lost On The River"
Jordi Savall and his group of highly talented players play with considerable élan and precision, they are also superbly recorded in a spacious and elegant acoustic.
Scherchen/Vinna State Opera Orchestra: Rismsky-Korsakov Scheherazade 1957 recording
Pretty risqué cover for the time. Astonishingly natural, dynamic and clear early stereo recording by Westminster Label.
It’s a bit sluggish and does not quit have a strong forward momentum feeling a bit sat on. The sound of solo violin however is intimate and sweet well suited for the role of heroin. Altho, rhythmically challenged, it shows a vivid soundscape through a dense and colourful instrument tones and harmony.
Over al this has a down to earth friendly feel. In some spots it reminds me of Strauss instrumentation of Heldenleben. ( or he must have been influenced by Korsakov )
The up and coming Anders Osborne album entitled Spacedust & Ocean Views.
Don't have a general release date for it yet or a cover though I have seen an image with a Zebra standing on a beach in front of an ocean which looked lame to me.
A more laid back effort than his last few but still a really good album
Beecham/philharmonic Orchestra: Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade 1957 recording
Ultra smooth sophisticated genteel elegance.
Excellent layering of instruments and suave turn of every corners creates a mysterious yet sensual atmosphere. A high production value and feels the sense of luxury and lavished decorations everywhere.
It is almost ballet like with light footed dancers on the stage. The final movement, whilst it might not be as gutsy and earthy for a shipwreck passages, Lento segment to the closure is quite skilled and masterfully done to leave a lasting impression.
Enjoyed more than I thought I would.

Have to say Kuma I love reading your descriptions re the albums you listen to. Helps me search out some of the best classical titles in a myriad of releases.
Finally got round to listening to this great bit of vinyl...
