Bernstein/NYP: Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade Op.35  1959 recording

Many of Lenny’s 50-60s NYP has this glossy Technicolor look to it and this one isn’t an exception.

Corny, sentimental and littered with cliche moments, cheapen further this overplayed score. Like a pattern of Arabesque, instrument style seems to be over filigreed ( oboe, flutes etc.. ) and at times feels like an over laboured and thickly laid out Tchaikovsky systemphonies.

Cyndi Lauper. She's So Unusual. On original vinyl from 1983. A powerful synth/pop debut, very artistic, and yes, I agree with the album title.

Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings - Volume 2

I have never heard any of Bill Wyman music before so i did not know what to expect, first impressions very good mix of styles, one that will grow on me with more listening.

If you like that might want to try this one. Great rockin' album and the SQ on vinyl is very good.

When Acoustic Sound came out with their new Classic Record reissue, I got to listen to it amongst many of other reissues of Reiner/CSO's Scheherazade at Jay's house. ( active DBL )

I recall that the original Stereo White Dog sounded the best followed by the original Classic Record reissue then maybe the original Plum Label, then the other Chesky and AP reissues were non starters. It was a fascinating exercise because each of them had a very different and distinctive balance.

Ever since then I have been on a hunt for a Stereo White Dog but so far I found locally a Mono White Dog copy.

What a commanding towering intro compared to Lenny’s. Plenty of pregnant pauses to build up an anticipation before he gets into the sweeping massed strings creating a big sea scape. Excellent micro dynamics but I just think that instrumentations as well as calibre of individual musicians are higher at the CSO than NYP. A lot less cornballs and no *cheap* filigrees maintaining a lofty classy presence. ( I suppose that's *Reiner* sound )

Sidney Harth's solo violin does not sound as intimate as Scherchen set and a tad cooler than John Weicher ( previous 1st violin at CSO who played a solo in Reiner's Heldenleben ). 3rd movement does not quite have a fluid sexy line of Beecham as he’s playing pretty much by the book and feels a bit stiff.

Extremely colourful and vivid, the orchestra actually create the sound of ocean waves splashing against the rocks. Slowly accelerating tempo towards the finale with sound of wind in the back is truly dramatic without sounding like a cartoon. One of the great build then slowly dissolves into a placid silence. Beautiful blend between a delicate solo violin and a faint Sultan motif and a sustained single note of violin that feels like forever.

Scheherazade was a special piece for a young Reiner as he wrote a letter to Monteux on his 80th birthday thanking him for many orchestral techniques and musical interpretations he learned from Monteux's Scheharazade performance in Budapest days.

Here's young Fritz.

Sheila Chandra "Moonsung". Wonderful vocal music differing styles from Celtic to Indian.

Had a listen to BJH - Once Again, I thought the voice was weak not a bad album though, they have made some great music over the years.

Now also via Tidal, after hearing a track on Radio Paradise:-

The Arcs - Yours, Dreamily. I know nothing about them, lead singer sounds bit like the guy from the Artic Monkeys.

I never really got this when it was released but I now realise that it's a fabulous work and to my mind could well be her best, which by the way, sounds great in Hi-Res.

Because she is rather lovely....err....I mean this album is lovely, you know, the album.

As they say when you are in a hole, stop digging.

Cyrille (why I think I am on first name terms I'm not sure) is like a chirpy Melody Gardot.

Check it out - this is on Tidal.
