2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

Based on my own preference I finally landed now with Espen Berg. His albums are difficult to acquire in Germany. But absolutely recommended for people who like Marcin Wascileswky type of music (for trio) or who like sensitive jazz piano in case of his solo albums.....

Piano and bass jazz.  First play of this via Tidal - sounds good.

Then switched to the jazz album of the month. And I understand why. A modern and new sound, an album I will definitely aquire when available in high res...

Yes indeed - I've run this several times on Tidal - a nice blend of styles  - interesting having the two guitars in the mix.

This Heat, Deceit from 1981. Again, this is a These Records CD re-release from 1991:

Rediscovering this gem.

Driving, modern "jazz" (+ some electronica) trio.  Some very nice tracks on this  - "EST-like" in some respects.

Purely by coincidence Gogo Penguin v2.0. No reason other than it just feels right. Nick's record is on order.

Camilla Tilling has a lovely voice and the technical goods (an effortless high C in Delphine) but it's the way she acts through colouring/modulating her voice, is magical. The song selection is great, almost all among Schubert's best 'serious' songs, including highlights as Der Zwerg and Gretchen am Spinnrade.

Cheers

This because it has a brilliant version of "Heroes" particularly Dennis Davis drumming which is stunning..

I've never understood why this album is so overlooked, I think it's a great mix of (then) old and new.

The tracks from Ziggy are great, in fact this was where I heard them first, took me a while to get used to the guitar on the album track of Ziggy Stardust song.

I saw him 3 nights on this tour and he was brilliant.

It is alleged that on the nights of the recordings for the album the band slowed certain numbers down a little.

All the shows on the tour were recorded.

Yes, there are lots of very good quality boots of the '78 "Isolar II" tour. I think one reason why Stage was controversial at the time is because it has gaps between the songs, and songs were arranged in the order that they were released, rather than the order they were actually played at the concert.

I think there is nothing wrong with a lot of the individual songs - "Breaking Glass", with its coda, is superb - it's just that it's a bit sterile. I actually prefer the noughties EMI reissue, which removes the gaps, adds extra tracks and restores the correct running order.

More This Heat - a fantastic EP from 1980...

Favorite Schirmer disc.

Time to get this out, on '70s vinyl. Can were of course a big influence (along with TG) on my favourite group of the moment, This Heat.

...and this has decided what I am going to listen to next.  The Beethoven-Etudes truly rates among my most loved and inspirational models of musical treasure that I hang on to dearly.  It was Ragna Schirmer who introduced this work to me and it was Haim who introduced me to Schirmer in the first place - a debt that I could never afford to repay.

Norwich vs West Ham on BBC Radio 5 Live. For fairly obvious reasons. Win this and we will go fifth, above Van Gaal's cloggers!
