What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
Train "Bulletproof Picasso"
Ticciati/Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Haydn Symphony 101.
A terrific new release from Linn Records.
1974. Richard Thompson is playing a local arts festival this summer. Can't wait.
Beecham/Royal Philharmonic: Haydn Symphony No.101 1958 recording
Smooth and highly polished, this is more of standard Haydn that I expect. Old fashioned with no sharp corners anywhere.
Very aristocratic Mozartian in handling less emphasis in a rhythmic pulse compared to Ticciati. Even the *ticks* in the second movement are rounded and smoothed out. Beecham’s elegant reading starts to sound too much of the same same. Sugar overdose by the back end of 3rd movement. Jupiter like 4th but too much pastel hue and not enough brilliance and transparency.
There is a place for Beecham style but here ironically it makes the score sounds dated.
The Beatles. Mono Masters. On 3LP from 2014. A welcome energy and vitality to this set, and the clarity is impressive.
Klemperer/Philharmonia: Haydn Symphony No.101 1960 recording
Less syrup and straighter approach than Beecham. Klemp gives more of a Beethoven slant than Mozartian. Corners now have sharper points and melody line has a wider dynamic contrasts. Andante *clock* segment however, he does not emphasize the main ticking bits. Rather taking a rounder accents where the landing notes do not have the crisp edge to avoid a cliche.
Stately 3rd movement. Elegant flute riding on a syncopated orchestra creates refreshing yet rustic moods. No wiz bang finale but closing it rather classy whilst maintaining clarity and brilliance.
Blink-182. Greatest Hits. On CD from 2005. A nice collection of powerful punk pop songs and a good example of a mastered for loudness CD.
Choir of Young Believers famous for the theme to The Bridge

Klemperer understood the difference between the musical styles of Haydn and Mozart. Indeed in the methods of orchestration and indeed the use of rhythm as a driving force, Beethoven followed Haydn far more than Mozart. Your observations make perfect sense to me.
By any standards this is a great performance of the Clock Symphony ... still available today on CD. Indeed, the whole series of Haydn recording by Klemperer is highly enjoyable on so many levels. And equally strangely it is not close to complete. Perhaps EMI were not very enthusiastic about these recordings, One of Klemperer’s very last recordings is of the Oxford Symphony. I love that performance, even though it does not have the virility found in the earlier recordings.
ATB from Geprge
Still good, though not so great as I initially thought..
Neil Young with Crazy Horse. Broken Arrow. On HDCD from 1996. NY + CH = trippy psychedelic rock with the usual couple of protracted anthems. This album has all that though musically it's probably the weakest of their collaborations.

Impressions by Lunatic Soul
(2011)
Different to his previous two albums more ambient, akin to an immersive film score perhaps? This is very good again from Mariusz Duda.

Bought on Massimo's reco in another thread:

Via NPR "First Listen", sounds pretty good to me :-
Bonnie Rait - Dig in Deep.

Just had something of a 'doh' moment with this album. While I've had it for ages and always liked it, it was only this evening that I noticed my CD is a special version with a second CD tucked away on the reverse side of the jewel case and on CD2 is a recording of her performing live in Paris in 2009. And it's bl**dy good, too. A nice surprise but I do feel a bit of an idiot!

Thanks very much for posting this Mike, after seeing it I checked my order (from the River about 7 months ago) and it would seem that I too unwittingly bought the imported two CD album with the live Paris performance on disc two! A trip up to the attic is called for this weekend to find, unbox and rip it. What a pleasant surprise.

Playing side one of this double album, disc two contains live tracks recorded at the Gloria Theatre in Cologne. Fantastic progressive (post-progressive) album from this Norwegian band who get better and better.
"It was the band's first true concept album in that it is one long song split into five parts. The album has been completely re-mastered (in 2012) for this Kscope edition. Gazpacho have honed their unique sound over a string of critically acclaimed albums and numerous tours, including several with long-time supporters Marillion."

He also gets this music! See post in reply to you earlier.

Tidal, sometimes some only some ZZ Top will do:-
ZZ Top - Lucky Thirteen, a recording of a live radio broadcast.
It seems my recent postings on here are by artists who unfortunately are no longer with us. This gentleman is IMHO a genius, he is a mixture of country, blues and bluegrass. If that appeals to you then I urge you to give this a listen. It is on Tidal. On this album Chris was live and solo in a very small venue (from the applause, seems like only 20 people in the audience) nonetheless it is a wonderful recording of a wonderful artist.
RIP Chris, I for one will miss your genius.
Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby (1961), nice mastering on this Analogue Productions SACD from the 'original analogue tapes..using all tube electronics' by the late great Doug Sax.
