New 500 DR no switch on thump

Posted by: AxelA on 02 January 2016

I have received a new 500DR replacing my faithful 500 and one of the thing that I have noticed is that there is no switch on thump, or the thump of the capacitors discharge on switching off.

Has anybody notice s the same phenomena?

My 250DR is just the same. The light seems to stay on for about five minutes after you switch it off too.

Ditto my NAP300DRs (3 of, making it less likely to be a lucky fluke!)

That's good then. I've never been bothered by the thump, but it does seem to upset some people to an excessive degree. So as well as massively improved sound, DR banishes the thump. It's a win, win scenario.

Can you describe the difference in sound between the new and old NAP500?

Old - On turn on there was a loud thump heard from the speakers and on turning off, a pop coming from each speaker, at about the same time, after 20 or so seconds from pushing off.

new - very small thump on turn on, non on switching off.

Hi Alexa.

Would like to hear your views on the change to 500DR.

Is there a thump on a converted 500 to DR does any body know? Must say the thump can be intrusive. Always mute with volume zero.

Apart from the thump though. Can you describe how the music sounds with the 500DR in place over the non DR version.

Yeah Axela, not so worried about the thump, how does it SOUND !

The 500DR is still breaking in, only couple of days old.

As in other DR upgrades, initially the sound is a bit "polite" the bass is deep but less punchy, background noise is immediately lower enabling more details and better imaging. With time, bass will take authoritative punch, the sound will be highly dynamic, harmonics will be beautifully presented and more music will be extracted from the source. Worth investing.

+1 I'm really keen to understand how the 500DR compares to the 500.

Because my 552 was away in Salisbury for weeks it wasn't clear what the DR and service improvements were. My audio memory isn't that good.

Well I've only had my 300 DR for just over 2 weeks, so it's only been powered on once, but it definitely thumped when I powered it on.
