connecting UnitiServe to WD cloud
Posted by: dottore17 on 04 January 2016
I want to back up my UnitiServe. Can I connect it directly with the WD Cloud External drive via the USB ports? If so, then how do I copy the files?
No - you can not. The USB port on the UnitiServe is meant to read a small sized USB memory stick. It will not handle a hard drive.
The only way that I know of backing up a UnitiServe is to an external NAS. UnitiServe was really designed as a networked device - since it must be connected to intenet via an ethernet cable.
i would recommend that you buy a good NAS (e.g. QNAP or Synlogy), connect it via an ethernet cable and then back up your US.
The correct way to back up a Unitiserve is to a NAS on your network. It's a bit of a faff to set up, but hassle free once it's done. I wouldn't fancy your chances of restoring music files and metadata from a USB drive, especially if you're using WAVs.
I have a feeling the WD cloud drive is a nas. If it is then you can connect, via an ethernet cable and a switch, to your unitiserve and create a back up.
Thank you all for your advice. I am new to this game. I'll go for the internet solution although I understand it will be slow.. .
I bought the WD Cloud as a nas device. Does this mean i can connect directly to the UnitiServe via an ethernet cable?
If it's a NAS, you can attach it to your home network and the Unitiserve will find it. Attach it to a switch or your router, not direct to the US. I don't know how good it is as a NAS, Synology and QNAP are the most popular ones around here.

No - not directly. You have to attach your NAS to your switch / router. In essence creating a small 'computer' network. That is now NAS and UnitiServe work - on a computer network.

Not internet - Ethernet (wired network cables).
Please ensure that you use Cat 5e as a minimum, to ensure correct transfer speeds.

This is a typical small audio network with a switch - the alternative is no switch & to connect the NAS to the wireless router & from router to network player, but not all wireless routers are great at switching duties - better with a switch whatever.
I really am grateful for this help. The WD Cloud and the Unitiserve are already connected via a switch, which, in turn, is connected to the router. So I'll go via the internet route.
Ok - before you start, please read the detailed manual on how to set it up - you can search the forum. It's a bit tedious to start with, but works well and trouble free thereafter.
I am not very computer literate but managed to connect a WD Cloud to my network for backing up my Unitiserve. It was fairly easy--only required one call to WD tech support and they were very helpful. The Cloud is connected to my router. The US is connected to a powerline adaptor. The US recognized the Cloud immediately and backup has functioned pretty seamlessly. Very pleased with the WD cloud and it's pretty inexpensive.
Now that's interesting. In my system both US and WD Cloud are connected to the switch. They are recognised in the system as shared via Finder and both "connect". However that's where it stops. What do I do next? I cannot find a menu on the US allows me to copy to the WD, nor anything on the WD that would allow me to pull the Music across. What am I doing wrong? I'm moderately computer literate, but clearly not enough!
You need to 'tell / define' the locations on the NAS for your UnitiServe. There are detailed instructions on this forum and the main website.
You need to tell the UnitiServe to use the WD as a back-up. I have two WD NAS drives set as separate back-up drives for my HDX in my main system.
I seem to recall having to set up (on the Uniti) the NAS as a music share or a music store (I forget which) then change a setting (on the Uniti) to make the NAS available as a back-up.
I'd need to read the manual to check which is the correct sequence!
