N-272 doesn't play DSD Files

Posted by: ragman on 04 January 2016

Hi,

have downloaded the Carmen Comes Inc. - Thousand Shades of Blue from Soundliason as a DSD (64-DSF) .

Using JRiver as UPNP Server the Album was shown in the NAIM App.

Starting one of These tracks the App goes into a black window with a wite circle inside (turning around)

The N-272 fist indicates on the Display "Connection" the a failure an than that the track was skiped.

Any idea?

I'm running asset on a Qnap NAS and that does not currently support DSD playback.

i copied the DSD file onto a usb memory stick and plugged it into the front of my 272. It plays fine but I don't get any artwork in the app.

ive just had a look at the jriver wiki and it looks like it does support DSD playback. If you haven't done so, might be worth a read as it looks like there is a few setting tweaks to be done / checked.

I think Harty601 has hit the nail on the head,   what is your NAS & does it support DSD or are you storing the file on a PC or Mac.  I'm not sure about JRiver & it does not appear straightforward,  it looks like it runs a DSD file but does so by converting to PCM.  Maybe worth trying another media server.  Also is the 272 connected over ethernet or wireless as wireless can struggle with high density files depending on its operating environment.
If it turns out your NAS & its media player do not support DSD,  the DSD file can be converted to WAV or FLAC with dBpoweramp so at least you can hear it.   But before that,  it might be worth an e-mail to Sound Liason explaining your problem & will they allow you to have a 2nd download in WAV or FLAC - but remember to keep a DSD copy for the day you can play DSD
On the subject of Carmen Comes Inc. - Thousand Shades of Blue,  that is a superb album,  I was listening to it last evening.

I use JRiver MC18 with files stored on a PC and linked to my 272 by a wired, gigabit network. DSD plays through the 272 and, when playing a track, shows up on the Naim app as a DSD file, not PCM (e.g. DSD 2822.4kHz  5644kb/s). Hope that helps!

Hallo,

thanks for the answer's. I'm using a UNRAID Server as NAS and an additional HTPC running JRIVER MC21.

The Server, the HTPC and the NAC-N 272 are all conected in the same Gigabit Network by wire.

I'm going to check the JRIVER Settings for DSD. Maybe there is a kind of converting to PCM or so set.

The test with the USB stick I will do as well.

There is a setting in jRiver which supports converting DSD to a DoP (DSD over PCM). That's the one you should use. It workd perfectly fine.

Other option is use Minim Server. It has a very easy setting for passing DSD files.
