Neat iota terminals

Posted by: ssmith on 05 January 2016

Hi guys,

I'm sure this is a stupid question but I'm going to ask any way. I have some neat iotas wall mounted to keep them out of reach of a 1 year old. I have naca5 terminated on airlock banana plugs. When inserted they leave a few mm protruding and due to the naca5 being so firm the plugs are starting to bend.

On the iota terminals there is the option to unscrew the speaker terminals which would cover the protrusion on the banana plugs. Not sure if this is the done thing? The iotas have bi wire terminals. If any one has any advice that would be great.

Thanks

Sam

I had some Iotas and I get what you mean - when fully pushed in the banana plug protrudes by a couple of mm.  This shouldn't be an issue though, the issue is the stiffness of the NACA5!  If you partly unscrew the terminal it may become unstable and not provide a firm connection, so I wouldn't advise it but you could give it a go.  It is only meant to be unscrewed when using bare wire or a spade connector - so perhaps fitting spade connectors would be a solution, or changing the speaker cable completely; NACA5 is good but isn't the b'all and end all in my opinion.

Maybe Naim banana plugs would be better, as the cable goes into it at 90 degrees so wouldn't cause them to be stressed?

Ok guys thanks for the info. Anyone have any recommendations for naca5 that are more flexible with decent performance that aren't crazy in terms of price?

Thanks

Use Naim speaker terminals. These are at right angles to the cable which is ideal for close-to-wall siting.  Proper soldering will be a nice upgrade from airlock which by all accounts doesn't seem to work so well on NACA5.

p.s. Do Neat Iotas have bi-wire connectors?

Hi Richard,

I may have just made up the bi wire as was part of blurb on naim website.

Would the naim speaker connector poles be the same distance as the plug that goes in the back of the unitiqute?

Thanks Sam

I believe some people have removed the black plastic housing on Naim plugs to allow them to fit in any terminals regardless of spacing.

Out of interest how are the airlock regarded compared to a screw connector presumably an improvement? As Mentioned by Richard the name connector would be the best.

Thanks

Yes, as Chris states above, if the spacing is not exactly to Naim's spec then the plastic housing can be removed and red and black heat-shrink put in its place.

Airlocks aren't so bad, but they sound better without the external shroud which is metal. Unfortunately this means going back to heat shrink...

The best solution irrespective of cable is Naim's SA8 plug because the actual pins are at right angles to the cable, which causes much less stress on the speaker sockets. I think the neat spacing is the same as SA8s so the SA8 housing will also help here.

The only other solution would be spades I guess.

As far as I know, iotas are single wired.

Frank.

My Iotas are definitely incapable of being bi-wired. Two speaker terminals only!! I find Chord Odyssey the ideal solution to NACA5 inflexibility.

I have the same issue with my Iotas. They are definitely not bi-wirable, but the NACA5 does somehow force the cables to stay in place when wall mounted, so shouldn't come loose.
