NAC 82 - NAC 282
Posted by: al9315 on 05 January 2016
I have trawled through the posts to little avail
I have NAC 82 2 x HC 2x135
Mainly play LPs LP12/Ekos/Lingo/OC9
About to get turntable serviced and new cartridge
I would like to know what sort of improvement the 282 would be over 82 - I am out of touch with all the 'black' equip
I may consider a 282/SC if it would be worth considering - my alternative is probably to get all my existing equip serviced? I do not mind mixing olive/black - if it does not mind being mixed ?
Can anyone give me a clue - e.g. 10% - 20% .......... or any other way of describing what I might expect ?
Thank you for any responses
Al
Your money and the result is much better spend on a Nac 52/psu
its a classic and should cost less (serviced) than new 282 which basically is a refined 82 in another cabinet
and a more neutral cart than OC9 will provide much more than 10% - 20%...imo.. no offense
If your 82 is a pots 8 version it's more of a side ways move to a 282, as B_Lund suggests look out for a NAC52
Are you talking about a 252 or a NAC52 - do not see many around - and is old 52 an improvement over 82 - I always thought 82 & 2xHC was similar to 52 ?
Nope, a 52 is a big step up from an 82, even a fully loaded one.
Certainly I think some auditioning is in order here.
The 282 is far from a re-boxed 82, and the 52 is also far from a 282 in presentation.
Indeed if the 52 is being seriously considered, then one might as well also consider the 72, which is so much less expensive and thus easily allows for a complete service to bring it back to top spec! Between the 52 and the 72, I found the 72 a long term favourite, while the 52 is certainly very good.

Years ago I asked A senior Naim person whether it was worth swapping from an 82 to a 282. No was the answer.
I would swap the 82 and hicaps for a late 52 with Olive Supercap. The 52 is miles better than the 82 and in combination with the 135s is an absolute classic.

You hit it HH.
he did
plus service 135's if never done
The main issue is however still the OC9 IME, do this replacement first, along with a deck service, take it from there
If you use phonocards inside Nac 82, these will fit into a 52 but not a 282
As a 282 owner I would say if you're going to change 52/252 to make it worth the while. But the cartridge will really make a difference. Dynavector XX........

If you're going to keep any of your existing gear, get it serviced regardless. You might decide the improvement is so great that you're happy to keep what you've got.
52 every time for me over an 82 easily, 72 very very easily and over a 282 no question. Only pre better than a 52 from Naim is a 552. 52 must be pots 8 serviced copy however.

Agree 100% and have finally sent my 282/250/SC lot for a full service. I'm pretty content with what I've got and I rather listen to my music than spend endless days and nights worrying about which bit of kit to upgrade next. I'm sure many people would disagree but music always comes first 'round ere' Simples!![]()

When I was in a similar position to you - LP12 Cirkus / Ekos / Lingo / Transfiguration Phoenix 82 / Supercap (Black) / 250 - I was contemplating a 52 or 252. I thought that it would be a simple decision.
After listening I ended up with a Radikal - just a thought
- and a Linn Keel or Kore subchassis would be another.
Keeping but servicing the existing gear could then complement this ![]()
Just done it and the 52/SC is the answer. I had the S/C serviced before I even plugged it in for 600 quid.
Hi
Thanks for most informative replies !
WHERE does one find a 52/SC ???
Thanks
Al
They are out there but less so than a second hand 282 which is indeed not a meaningful move. People tend to hang on to their 52s since the only way from there is to leave Naim or go to a 552.
You might want to see what a modern SCdr does to your 82 instead of the 2xHC. At least then you are ready for a 52/252 when you can spot one and, although only your ears can decide, I found a single SCdr outperforms 2xHC on a 282 so no reason the same shouldn't be true for an 82.
Went from a Hi Cap to a Supercap many years ago a worthwhile upgrade.
Anybody using a Olive 82/Supercap/250 with S400s ?

Having the SC serviced was a smart move. Hearing your "new" 52 with a fresh SC ensures a level playing field when making comparisons. Also prevents a failing circuit component from ruining your fun and blowing a tweeter- don't ask me how I know this
! At this point, all olive power amps and power supplies should be used with caution if not serviced, imo.

Thanks for so much info !
My last question is : IF one got a SCdr - is the dr part of it compatible/effective with a NAC82 or does it require the new model equip to shine ?
Thanks
Al
Naim should be able to confirm immediately that a current SCdr is compatible with an 82 (I'm 90% sure it is but please check Naim). As for DR, anything compatible benefits. It's not reliant on any pairing of components.
+1 for the consensus. The 282 is a marginal upgrade over the 82 and not worth the money. I swapped my Hi Cap fora Supercap on my 82, and that was worth the money. The 52 is transformational--a huge step up over the 82/SC.
A full LP-12 service, which involves gutting the TT into its individual parts, is expensive and worth the money.
The Supercap DR will work with a 52. But as the 52 was designed with the olive supercap, that's what I'd stick with.

Depends where you live.

Hi
THAT'S the question!
Sometimes a 52 is appearing on the net, but it's really a rare item. And if one is appearing I find it to be quite expensive (keep in mind it's at least 15yrs old, has to be serviced in most cases, shipping costs have to be added).
Is it one of the most overpriced items? Or are >£2500 a reasonable price (with PS-SC)?
-dgh
For a later pots 8 52 and Supercap, all boxed and very good condition , and serviced in recent years, I'd reckon £3000 , or thereabouts.
I should add , worth every penny.
