Recommendations for Raspberry Pi setup to run Asset

Posted by: Gavin B on 06 January 2016

I've got my son a Qute for his upcoming 18th birthday and I'd like to get him a Raspberry Pi on which to run Asset with a USB drive for storage.

Do I need anything special, or would a Raspberry Pi 2 Quad Core Starter Bundle (£55 from Amazon) fit the bill?

Are the USB ports v2 or v3?

Thanks

Apparently, the £55 starter bundle should be adequate (and yes, it's just 2.0 USB). I bought one myself though never got around to figuring it out and ended up buying a QNAP NAS running Asset - seemed simpler  - but good luck!

Absolutely fine - I have two Pi's - a Pi1 running Asset and a Pi2 running MinimServer. The Pi2 is a lot more performant and is very nippy when searching and navigating - but the Pi1 running Asset is totally acceptable.

Both straightforward to setup with good instructions on the respective media server app web sites. I think you'll find the Pi2 more performant than many consumer NASs.

You can use USB storage or better still mount the NASs over the network on the Pi - again very straightforward and fast. Have no idea on USB version of ports - I only use for power - I use the Ethernet port for everything else.

An RP2 is fine. I have one running Raspbian (https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads). It is connected to a 4TB drive and runs 24/7 since a little bit more than one year. I use it mainly for backup purposes and for accessing my home network remotely but also as a UPnP server (minidlna) and as a HTTP server. Best, nbpf

Thanks, all.  I'll go with the RP2 kit.

I'm running Asset on a Raspberry Pi2 connected to NDX. All my music files are stored on a Synology NAS. All 3 devices are currently connected to a BT Homehub 5 ,but I've ordered a Netgear switch having read about the improvements that could bring.. In my set up, should all 3 devices go into the switch with a single patch lead connecting the switch to the hub, or would it be better to leave the NAS connected directly to the HH5 (as its not performing streaming duties).

Will, it matters not, assuming all supports GigE, just connect where most convenient.
