Dac V1 and Mac owners, can u do me a favour?

I want to check itunes (latest version 12.3.2.35 running OS X El Capitan) is playing back CDs ripped as apple lossless files bit perfect to my Chord Hugo. I have no way of checking but I know that V1 has test files. I have Hugo as selected output device (System Preferences > Sound) connected via USB. I also have set audo output to 44100hz to match CDs ripped as apple lossles (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > set output device to 44100.0Hz and 24 bit). Can you replicate these settings and use the V1 test files to verify playback is bit perfect for apple lossless 44100hz 16bit files? Any help/advice much appreciated, thanks.

iTunes volume slider should be fully up 100%.

You can purchase bitperfect on applestore for like 6 quid, this will ensure that what every bit depth the music at will be played from the mac. itunes will not automatically switch audio output.

The V1 has audiphilleo's test software built in to validate that the computer and software player upstream are capable of sending bitperfect files.

Not sure whether Hugo has such a feature. Best check with Chord.

As Garyi says, a dedicated software player such as Bitperfect, Audirvana, Amarra, and so on, will change the bit depth (and sample rate) automatically. Some of these players  also have their own audio conversion software which may be preferable to Mac OS's Core Audio (for example Audirvana has Izotope as well as the option to use Core Audio), as well as together features.

The question I would ask is what happens to replay its not bitperfect when using the Hugo? (I.e. Does the music stop?  Do you hear clicks? Nothing?)

Hi thanks for the suggestions. I have used BitPerfect previously and had all sort of subsequent problems when using iTunes and Apple remote app. After this experience I'm reluctant to try other software and there is no need really if iTunes plays back my apple lossless files bit perfect. All my music files are apple lossless 44100hz, 16 bit so not need to auto switch. I like iTunes and control it using Apple remote app on phone/ipad.

Hugo doesnt have audiphilleo or anything like it built in. If someone was able to do the test using a dac v1 that would be great. Thanks.

The music still plays back okay when defo not bit perfect for example you lower the iTunes volume or add iTunes EQ.

FWIW, my El Capitan Audio Midi setting are the same as yours and playing Apple Lossless (ALAC) or AIFF files are fine.  BItperfect tests for all supported bit depths and sample rates for the V1 (using iTunes and Audurvana) passed for the asynchronous USB output from the Mac (I.e. Not the SPDIF output)

If you need further assurance, someone who has both a V1 and a Hugo may be able to give it.

Many thanks Jude that confirms latest version of iTunes and OS X does indeed output bit perfect audio (I assume Audirvana was inactive and not interfering?). Good stuff.
