Streaming from NS01 to SONOS speakers
Posted by: DGHB on 08 January 2016
Simple question: is it possible to stream the library on a NS01 to SONOS speakers? If so, how?
Many thanks
DGHB,
I considered adding some Sonos to my Naim system a while ago but the Sonos is not really compatible with Naim servers. The way the NS01 stores its files (WAV) makes it impossible for the Sonos to read the files. Whilst you may somehow be able to get it to play a file, it has no idea what the file is, as it cannot read the metadata appended to Naim ripped files. So you cannot search for, or see the artists, songs, albums etc.
If you had ripped your files to FLAC or if your NS01 allows conversion to FLAC, it may become possible for the Sonos to access and read the files, but I'm only guessing as FLAC generally can be read by both. I would advise you contact Naim and Sonos support to see if they could clarify for you.
Before I changed to ripping in FLAC, I used the Mp3 back-up which is automatically generated by the HDX, to stream to Sonos. The sound quality on the Sonos is not terribly revealing and I found perfectly fine streaming as Mp3.
Now I rip to FLAC, I simply stream from the NAS back-up to Sonos.
