I read recently that article above that DSD128 sound better above all others formats file including DSD64
does anyone on this forum knows the reason why Naim did only DSD64 and not above, or maybe it wil be on the next Firmware to come
Mike-B posted:The network players support DSD64 & I believe thats the limit on the current hardware. The DAC's have new firmware released that supports both DSD64 & DSD128Don't take press reviews too seriously, they sell exciting words & not always real lifeI listened to DSD128 last week on a friends system, to me it was much like the difference between 24/96 & 24/192 PCM, its hard to tell & IMO not worth the significant cost for hard to find DSD128 material over the more commonly available & more reasonably priced DSD64
Unlike you, I did hear differences between 24/96 to 24/192 not always but still in many case.Mike did you expirence any different between PCM toDSD if so what do you prefer for best results
Mike-B posted:Don't misunderstand me, I hear differences between 24/96 & 24/192, but it depends on material & also the quality of the original recordings. With well recorded material it is more distinct with 192. I have trouble hearing any difference with heavy & dense materials such as rock bands & full orchestra's, I seem to hear more differences in the upper end of the frequencies. As to what sounds best - keep in mind DSD is not that common & some of what is DSD available has been converted from another recording format & is not native DSD - also my DSD listening experience is very much in its early learning curve.I have the belief that generally DSD is a recording niche area, the people who record in the medium tend to be serious about producing a high quality recording all the way through to the end product & this is probably the main reason why we hear something better and/or different with DSD. I do find DSD better with the lighter acoustic/semi acoustic/ensemble instruments & lighter coral & solo voice recordings. To me its more natural, detailed & distinct. I hear the skin & the wood, I hear & feel the distance to the musicians. I would have no hesitation selecting DSD in that type of music especially if it native DSD. With heavier louder material. I have done some comparisons with full orchestral & to be honest I found it impossible to hear any difference so as yet I'm undecided & its best to say my jury is still in discussion.
O.k I came to the same conclusion that it's important from where did The files come first, because I was confused some music files sound to me better on DSD and others files sound better on PCM
Well, theoretically it should be better. In real world though, 99% of DSD128 material consists of vinyl rips. There's very few professionally done DSD128 files you could buy. SACD itself is DSD64. Maybe there exist some really well made vinyl rips, yet I have to find one. Wish it was so simple - you pick DSD128 and have best quality... And if there's different mastering for PCM and DSD, comparing PCM to DSD in such scenario is nothing more than comparing apples to oranges.
Optimization and code writing appear to be very difficult at this level where it can make all the difference in SQ. As there is still little music commercialized in true DSD128 Naim has elected not to offer the format with their streamers yet. Let's see and hear how it turns out with nDAC and V1.
