Muso in John lewis

Posted by: Crunch on 10 January 2016

i must have this rant. I think naim have made a big mistake selling the muso at J L. Yesterday I visited my local JL. There was the muso, stuck on an end shelf. No display stand or information ect, Speaker domes pushed in, a bad cosmetic state too !!!! They don't know about the stuff they sell!! Glad I got mine from a proper hi fi shop. Where they know about the product.

Nigel, no such thing as a free lunch come over in the summer and I will buy you one, thanks for the input.

Steve, timing of launch has worked out rather well actually we are delighted with the sales, of course the challenge is to improve everything we do not just our products but the whole naim experience....

Hi Paul,

I'm delighted with mine but there were a few teething problems with the software at launch. I'm pleased it's doing well but I still feel improvements could be made at the point of sale at the John Lewis stores I've visited.

Paul,

Thanks, I'll take you up on that and maybe combine it with a factory tour if you are holding these in the summer.

Please remember none of my feedback is intended to be critical and I am trying to be constructive without being so presumptuous as to tell Naim what they should do. It is just that you may not see what your potential customers see through this new (to Naim) sales channel. IMHO Mu-so and Mu-so Qb have a large market with massive sales potential (compared to traditional black boxes) but will need to be marketed well (and in a different way) to fulfil this potential. I am sure you are delighted with the sales volume so far, but there are definitely sales out there that are being lost from my experiences in JL and Apple Stores (again IMHO).

I am passionate about the brand and want Naim to continue to do well so I can continue to enjoy future product developments. Purely selfish you see!

As someone who owns and runs a high-end manufacturing business which has won countless awards (in the food area), I know exactly how hard it is to do in-store demos, having done many myself in places like Fortnum and Mason, Selfridges, Harvey Nicks. Getting the staff to do what you would like them to do, in terms of product placement, even getting the damn things in a coherent order, is nigh-on impossible.

Its even worse in larger emporia where the placement of products is, to be blunt, managed from HQ and dictated by how much "co-sponsorship branding fee" (aka marketing bribe) you (as a supplier) are prepared to pay the shop.

If you want to get very scared, dig into the relationship between suppliers and the largest supermarkets. It is terrifying.

This is a new space for Naim, creating the marketing material that will actually make a difference in the retail spaces like JL. But lets not get too upset -- sales of muso are excellent, with (almost as important) incredibly low return rates. Returns can destroy any hope of profit quicker than you can believe.
