Unitilite with Bluetooth and more questions
Posted by: Anto68 on 11 January 2016
I'm having a low quality audio playback with the new bluetooth feature; Upnp, Spotify and Tidal streaming are extremely more pleasant, almost close to the quality of the CD player. Is there anyone who has an updated player to bluetooth that can confirm? I use bluetooth with my Samsung smartphone ; or the problem maybe is due to the low quality of my musics files stored on my device.
I have two more questions to ask:
1) When I select the handset info (i) it does not work when play Spotify: with other inputs it's ok, the display show supplementary information: it is normal that spotify does not support it ?
2) I really miss the standby function, why it is not introduced in Naim? I do not like turning off from the main switch on the back and I do not like even keep uniti on all the time.
Anto
Bluetooth audio is there for convenience rather than sound quality. It will never be as good as UPnP. If you have low quality (MP3) files on your phone, that won't help either.
Spotify is controlled through it's own app once you select the input, I suspect this is why the 'info' button isn't giving you the info, but I no longer have a Spotify account, so I can't confirm this. Tidal is controlled from within the Naim app, and the 'info' button works with it.
Naim recommend that all their equipment is kept on all the time - it performs better if it's warmed up and stabilised. That's why the switch is hidden on the back panel.
I simply turn the volume knob down to zero, rather than turn it on or off.
I don't use Spotify, so can't comment on the info button.
I have used Bluetooth on my iPhone to stream some music, 192kbs Mp3s, which sounded OK (I was surprised how good it sounded) but certainly not up to the same standard as uPnP
With the Uniti, you can always mute it when you are not listening to it. As others have said, you will get better and more consistent performance if you leave it turned on. Naim has been like this for 40 years - you'll just have to get used to it... If you are streaming cd quality tracks over upnp you should find the sound better than from the built in CD player.
I've read this recommendation and i know Naim equipment was intended to be powered on all the time but this solution implies that the unit is drawing current all the time and I'm afraid to shorten the life of my U.L. perhaps it is my paranoia.
Anyway switching it off sometimes will there could be damage to the amplifier or this reccomendation is to just get better performance?
Thank you all
Dear all,
Slightly related question: I have the 'old' unitiLite without bluetooth. If I plug a BT dongle into the usb port do I get the same functionality as the new one?

No.
you'd need to add a Bluetooth receiver such as Arcam rBlink or an Optoma / NuForce BTR-100. These can connect via analogue or digital connection but you'd need to manually select the input,
Thanks Eloise,
If my son plugs in his iphone to the front usb port he can play music from the phone through the unitilite. What's the difference between that and making the same connection wirelessly?

I'd use WiFi instead, I can never get BT to work reliably unless the phone is about a metre from the device, in which case you might as well use a wired connection.
You could get an Airport Express and connect it to the UL with an optical cable, and use Airplay to play from your iPhone.

Use a mute function on your remote or you can programme a logo, to be used as a mute button. Once it goes into a mute status, it will draw as little powermas your tv in a standby mode. So.... Just use the 'mute' ![]()
As to an occasional off and on - no harm.
The whole idea of keeping your Naim powered is to get great performance, instantly. Capacitors are charged, etc etc etc....
Thanks ChrisU,
I was thinking that it might allow me to play podcasts or spotify music from a phone or ipad without having the premium premium version (only premium version has upnp option). My phone happens to have a problem with its sound jack connection but works really well with my usb headphones when I'm out and about. A usb dongle could costs less than £10 but airport express is £80.
I can get a BT music receiver but a BT dongle is neater.
I have a couple of old style AEs and they work fine. If you're patient you can pick them up on eBay for £20.
Many thanks ChrisU

Hi Adam,
can you explain me what you mean "you can progamme a logo to be used as a mute button"
Can i turn off the light on the naim logo?

Another way to exploit Spotify without the premium subscription is with Playstation 4 connected to UL via optical cable using IPhone or IPad to select musics tracks (of course you can turn off the TV screen after you have started the Spotify app). PS4 is a great media center, good as blu ray player and cheeper too

I find the front USB port next to useless for my self. I very rarely want to play music stored on the iPhone, but I often would like to come in and continue listening to a Podcast or Audiobook - but for that really need the control to be handled by the iPhone and the USB port to act as a dock connector.
So if Naim could get that method working on the Uniti series I would be very happy!

I presume it will work the same as the rest of the Uniti range.
- Press settings key on your remote (little wrench button)
- Go to Front Display
- Adjust the front desplay and logo behaviour there

Hi Adam,
in my UL is possible to adjust settings regarding the front display but not for the Logo as the UQ.
The logo still on all the time
edit:
I noticed in your profile that you have a SU, I suppose that even with your box you can adjust your logo
I have both the SuperUniti and UnitiQute2 - both have the same 'logo' feature. What software version is your UnitLite running?
