Supernait 2 as headphone amp?

Posted by: Lars Lidsmoes on 12 January 2016

Hello

I'm considering a Supernait 2 as I suspect it would be a great match with my speakers (Shahinian Compass). How is it as a headphone amplifier?

Any experiences and what headphones are a good match?

Thank you

Best regards Lars

In my view the headphone out of the SN2 is not very inspiring. I have a Sennheiser HD800. Best, nbpf

Somewhat of an understatement considering the price. Good for TV and movies.

I suppose the best that can be said about it is that it doesn't interfere with the main circuitry (I think).

It's more than just acceptable. I had a Headline and sold it when I got the Supernait 2 (I didn't see the point in having 3 boxes). I didn't notice much difference, but it depends on the headphones, and on how much you're going to listen to it.

If, like me, you're not into headphones that much, like your SN2 and want to eliminate boxes then it's OK.

If you're really into headphones, are looking for an integrated amp with a top notch HP output then I would say that for what the SN2 costs you could do a lot better. Actually most entry level integrateds or just about any 70's vintage receiver will put the SN2's HP output to shame.

Thank you for your replies. I gather its mostly for casual listening and is not up to the sonic qualities of the speaker outputs.

When I had a Nait XS/Headline/FCXS I found it superb and looked forward to a little HP listening late each night. With the SN2's HP-out my HP listening has become scant. I say that with the caveat that my Beyer T70's are 250 ohms and several users here have suggested that 30 ohm HP models can work well with the SN2. I've yet to investigate more efficient HPs and chose instead to buy my wife a second TV she can use in a separate room. A surprisingly nice 42" TV for $300 is cheaper than quality headphones as well as an easy remedy now that we've become empty nesters.

AKG K812 - work very well with my SN2

My 2 cents: I think the headphone out on my Supernait 2 is quite good, but I found a great improvement when I connected a Little Dot II amp. I use HD650 headphones, not an easy load, to be honest...different headphones could sound great or very good without a dedicated amp, I think.
