Superunity auto switch on/off (muting)

Posted by: Shiwa van der Horst on 12 January 2016

I bought last year my Superunity and from the beginning it very often it goes spontaniously on/off. Yesterday it went on and off every 3 seconds for a period of minutes. Then I switched off the Superuntiy at the backside. Does anybody know what the problem is?

I assume its the muting switching on and off ... could there be something sending spurious IR signals which is causing this?

Is the whole unit losing power, of is it just the sound that's cutting out? If so, you may have a network problem.

Is it just the sound cutting out?  Or is the unit actually switching off and on? Is it happening on all sources?

Its only muting (Naim-logo on/off), not losing power. I don't think its a network problem, also with no network-cable it goes on and off, on different sources (tv-digital, Upnp, Macmini-digital, radioFM-analogue/internal). It helps for a while when I put the Superunity off on the backside and on again.

Why not just take it back and ask for a new one? It's under warranty.

I guess I have to do that... a new one? or are they gonna solder a new muting-logo?

Until you take it back you will never know. But if it's not working you must take it back. You've spent a lot of money and it should be perfect.

Shiwa, have you tried the SU in a different room or swapped power sockets?

Is the switch on the back set to chassis or floating?

Do you get any static discharges when moving across the room?

Sounds like a logo issue to me. Happens occasionally, it's a very simple fix. Any dealer should be able to do it, no soldering required. They're a capacitance switch and some tend to be more sensitive than others, that's all.

It could be a fault. Or.. If its muting then it may be the protection circuitry cutting in. Any loose speaker strands shorting? How are the speaker cables and connectors? You're not trying to run very low impedance speakers are you? Either way, you should discuss with your Naim dealer.

This started happening to me the other day on a SU I bought in October.  It had been fine but suddenly started muting every few seconds.

I contacted Naim who said it sounded like a faulty logo switch and told me to contact my dealer - apparently it's a simple fix.  In the meantime I searched this excellent forum and found a suggestion to go in to Setup / Front Display and set Logo Mute to No.  This has worked like a charm so far.  I will get the unit fixed but my dealer is 50 miles away, so it will have to wait for a convenient time.
