Goodness me!

I have noticed a phenomenon in ultra high-end audio where folks with the means will purchase and then sell after a few months when the next "gotta-have box" comes out.   This seems to be particularly true with very expensive speakers.

Their loss is your gain.  

That's how I could afford NBLs and a 500. Wealthy audiophiles are a blessing to the rest of us!

i have also bought some of my "high end" (?) stuff  from folks who i would consider to be very much like me -- definitely not "wealthy" in the sense i assume you meant, but blessed with what can only be considered a rather warped sense of priorities...

$140,000 will buy a respectable 3 bedroom starter home on a nice sized lot throughout much of middle America.

It's all relative. $140K will get you a single room apartment of 40m square (400 sqft) in the wrong side of town in some countries (like where I am) or maybe a plot of land out in the sticks big enough for a house but no front or back yard. If a basic 3 bedroom 85m square goes for around $1 million then the cost of Statement starts to seem just about justifiable (though what you would do with a system like that in a tiny living room I don't know).

You're absolutely right. It was kinda my point. $140K probably approaches the total cost of more than a few Naim systems here, and perhaps some vehicles as well. I think its great for folks that can afford those choices.  I've always been pretty happy with what I can afford and find myself fortunate. I'm glad to benefit from the trickle down of high end technology in my system and my car. Some day SuperLumina IC's may hit the s/h market at a price that could have me wondering whether I can afford one.

This is simply a dealer selling off their dem stock, which is usual practice. The discount is about a third, which seems very reasonable. I don't see for a second why Naim might be upset with one of their top dealers. It's a good deal for someone with the wherewithal, and good luck to them. 

Wonder would they knock the £649 off, if you went in with cash.

I've no idea what the business relationship is between Naim and a dealer regarding demo stock. Given it is called demo stock, I'd assume there is some sort of additional discount (or longer payment terms) on such kit on the understanding that it is used for demo use and not sold on immediately or in the short term. However, i've no idea what sort of contractual basis that is on (I am not a lawyer) so I have no idea if it is enforceable, as part of the naim/dealer contract. 

It does strike me as somewhat odd that a dealer would be exiting from demo stock of statement. I had a long chat with Manu at CES and he said that they had done a huge amount of work with Statement in USA (some twenty something events?), and that sales were starting in force. So why would a dealer sell the demo pair?

All rather odd.

I have no interest in cars, watches, expensive drugs (well not yet, so far) or costly escorts (as long as I can avoiding paying for that, which won't be long though), and I don't play Stock Exchange, so if I had the money and could find a pair of mint DBLs to plug in plus the proper living room, I'd probably buy it. Having never seen a Naim design lacking a strong visual appeal, safe the MU-SO, I find the Statement gorgeous, without mental reservations or shame.

No need to worry; I've just bought it.

Surely they sell the demo stock to enable them to restock with a new one. A lot of dealers replace their demo stock every year as a matter of course. It all sounds totally normal to me. If anyone is curious, why not call Norman and ask? There's no point in speculating on a dealer's commercial decisions here. 

Ah its the UHES set? I can vouch that the preamp is utterly wonderful, having had it in my active dibble system for a week. And yes, it must be upwards of a year old now, well travelled and most definitely done its work as demo stock!
