Are the separates line going to follow the muso aesthetics?
Posted by: dave-mac on 13 January 2016
I know a lot of Naim users love and are already deeply invested in the look of Naim's separates, but myself, personally, I don't like them. IMO, they look very dated, especially the green screens on the superuniti etc.
Are there any rumours floating around that they may follow the improved aesthetics of their lifestyle range?
I like the "classic" aesthetics so I hope not!!
Just a matter of time !
Oh dear!!

I do not know, but I personally do not very much like the "improved" aesthetics. I came to Naim mainly because of their classical line and of their green screens. To me, this is a radical, timeless design with a very strong identity. In fact, I think that the Mu-so will look dated well before the SU does so.
That's my personal assessment, of course. But design is not a matter of personal taste and I believe that, at this stage, it makes sense for Naim to keep the design of the Mu-so range distinct from that of the other ranges.
In a further step, it could make sense for Naim to move the design of the Mu-so range toward that of their classical ranges. But the other way round it would not make very much sense, I believe.
I don't know: in these adult years of mine, the Naim look has the communication power that the Disney logo had when I was 10 - I am totally incapable to observe it critically and judge it. The MU-SO, on the other hand, is an MDF box with a layer of clear aluminium glued to it; it has no specially pleasant proportions and is somehow bigger than it should.
If we are talking of the logo - the newer one, that looks like a MacBook keyboard - I agree it's elegant, but I can't see how the classic range can come to look like a MU-SO - perhaps like a Statement, if they give up the whole Fraim project and start to build vertical boxes..
The statement perfectly represents what I mean regards the muso - the clean aluminium, beautiful knob/wheel controls, perspex bottom shelf... it would seem to make perfect sense to carry that over to the old separates too.
I know my credit card is ready and waiting ![]()

It'll take more than that, hopefully. ![]()
Yes, I'd like a large full colour screen on a streamer too, with decent ppi ![]()
Also, a nice aluminium remote to match.
I really like the way the black boxes just sit there on the rack in the corner of the room, nice and discreet and they never really get noticed by any visitors. I can't think of anything worse than a pile of silver and plastic boxes. Horrible.
Yes!
Think this is only a matter of very short time. The seperates have received a last technical update with the DR technology, but the design aesthetics has come to an end in my eyes, this design route is dead.
White is the new green (logo) and silver the new black.

As ever, what goes comes round. How about something different !. ![]()
Well not polished silver of course, more like dark aluminium-space-greyish I would assume as body colour for the seperates
Next you'll be suggesting that a Ferrari shouldn't be red?
Nothing eclipses the CB 250 for rational sophistication imho.
All this nonsense with perspex and enforced 'waves'...enough already!

Modena Yellow is considered the official Ferrari color by some. Red was assigned to the Italian racing team, so Ferrari racing cars had to be red and many owners opted for this color as well.
Personally I would choose a Lamborghini, no colour preferences

Because they never got a trip on a green MG i suppose.
I love the understated look of the current line up. There's something about that mysterious green glow as well. Definitely hope they stay the way they are.

Large full color screen? Looks cheap and sounds horrible!
the DR power amps just came out, what is there to change?
the Porsche 911 still has the same shape more or less.
why mess with perfection?

I very much hope that the design has truly come to an end and that Naim is not considering moving away from where they are. If you prefer color screens, fancy aluminium decorations and the like, you will find plenty of alternatives to choose from. Most are freely quite cheap designs. If you like massive silver aluminium, go for Chord. I do not like the design but I certainly acknowledge its radicality and consequence. Naim's design has a strong identity. Understatement and minimalism are basic traits. For such a design, there is nothing worse than going the me-too way. Or giving the impression of going the me-too way.

Quite. I do like the Muso, but can see no reason whatsoever for redesigning the main range. Given that the 272 and the DR upgrades appeared very recently I can't see that a redesign is just around the corner. You'd imagine the radical DR overhaul of the main amplifiers would gave been delayed if a new look was coming. If people want shiny things they can buy Devialet.
this is quite a useless thread. Naim has always been about the music first.
A lot of threads a quite useless when you think about it. But it fills the pages and gives people something to do.

Very true Nigel.
New case work for the rest of the range in 2017 it is then! ![]()
Naim can't keep the current design forever and this is coming from someone has 7 'Classic' black boxes plus 8 layers of FRAIM.
They were/are current designs when i bought them but won't sound worse when the new designs arrive as they surely will do.
There are older designs out there in Hifi. The Linn Akurate range takes it's designs directly from the Linn AV processor they released in 1996.
However, Naim are hardly going to tell us whether they have a new line of designs in the pipeline. We'll know when it appears which could be next month, next year or 2030.
Personally, I don't have an issue with box count but I do want the gear to be understated. The fact that a $15K Naim box looks more or less like a $2K Naim box is a big appeal. There is no bragging built into the designs - just form following function (for the most part). And if you do not know what the decor is like in each customer's home, black(ish) with a single power lamp is the way to go. Silver and white may suite some homes better but not most.
