Speakers for NAC-N 272/NAP 250DR

Posted by: iburnell on 15 January 2016

Morning. Interested in auditioning  a NAC-N 272/NAP250DR combo and want advice on speakers. My info

1. Currently have NAC-N 172XS/NAP200 and Spendor A5. Happy enough with this but It appears the 272/250 is a good step up in class

2. Need to be floorstanders (have lively cats)

3. Room size about 20' x 13'

Already read similar article from Dan43 and my shortlist appears to be

Spendor A6R

PMC 20/23 or 24

Focal Aria 926/948

ATC SCM40

Perhaps ProAC Response D20R or 30R

Problem is living in South London very few decent dealers able to demo the range of kit and speakers so any recommendations on that welcome too

PS - what sort of discount would you reckon to get on new Naim kit - best I can see is about 5% off RRP

Thanks

My vote is for the ProAc D20R or D30R. I know no one has chimed in about them yet, but they are my favorites on your list, and I've heard all but the Spendors and Focals. I don't know if it's the new ribbon tweeter or what, but the D20Rs I listened to (on an NDX/SN2) were a fantastic balance of lively with a modern bass sound without overdoing anything. Lots of detail AND lots of fun. They can go real close to the rear wall to boot.

Couldn't agree more! Is it my imagination, or does this forum have as members a disproportionately large number of PMC fan boys!! I am unable to understand the attraction of the studio monitor 'analytical' sound in the home hifi environment. I personally find the Proac approach much more involving and,  as LeeTom says, good fun! Naim and Proac go together really well - give the D20s and D30s a try.

I see people mentioning the Focal 926's - What are peoples overall opinion, they seem very reasonably priced. I have Majik 140's now and like the size but would like to get something a  bit more engaging. What do Focal owners think of their speakers. I also am pairing with a 272/250DR

Have Focal 926s here, and very good they are too. Different presentation entirely than say SL2 and suit a different style of music, more rock orientated than say choral or lighter Jazz, which SL2 sing with.

Very tight deep but good bass, not flabby at all. Low/mid/highs very well balanced and I love them.

These 926s are now really on song and for the price are brilliant value, IMH and humble opinion.....
