Adele 25 CD shows track names when played.

Posted by: David Hendon on 18 January 2016

I have just realised that my wife's CD of Adele 25 lists all the track names when played in my car, whereas all other CDs, so far as I have noticed anyway, show track 1, track 2, etc.  In her car it shows the track name of the track playing but the entertainment system reports that it is playing MP3 rather than CD which is what it normally reports.  After ripping the CD in my Unitiserve, the rip streams as a 44.1 kHz WAV as usual.

Does anyone know what is happening here?

If it's a SONY release then maybe it has CD TEXT? This will show track names on a CD TEXT compatible player.  It seems only SONY has persisted with CD TEXT on their CD releases, others seem to have ignored it.

Thanks Richard -interesting. It seems to be a small company called XL Recordings Ltd, but there is no clue as to whether Sony is involved.  From their website and the total absence of any mention of Sony, I rather think not.....

My Rega Planet used to do this. Pretty neat but not well supported.

David's quite right. Home of White Stripes.

Is the CD any good? How is the SQ?

Doing a little bit of Google research, it appears that Adele is signed to XL and Columbia.  Columbia is owned by SONY Music, so perhaps that explains it...

I've seen it on quite a few newer CDs played in the car but I've never looked for a pattern or specific labels.  I just assume some manufacturers put it on and others don't.  There seems to be limited space per track so perhaps it's just bands with short song titles :-)

I wonder what effect the labelling has on sound quality for text compatible CDPs? As the OP states it plays as an MP3 versus CD in the car. What about on a home system?

cd text is something that is added at a mastering stage. It's part of the metadata that is added to any track.

She is. And it's the same XL that started in the early 90s as the home of The Prodigy, SL2 and other relatively low sales dance acts. I think they folded into Martin Mills' Beggars group (see also 4AD, Mantra and one of my favourites - Wiiija), and started taking punts on wider appeal acts, such as Adele and The White Stripes.

They got lucky with Adele. And are now also the home of Radiohead. However with Adele, I think her global distribution is handled by Sony Columbia so there's your Sony link.

But in the UK, she's definitely handled by (what was) a small company called XL.

As it happens I also bought my wife the limited edition ("Target") version with three bonus tracks. That is also distributed by XL.  But this copy doesn't report the track names and her car doesn't think it's MP3.

Someone further up the thread asked about SQ. I haven't listened very carefully, but my impression is that they both sound the same and better than MP3, but rather compressed, as I have also seen mentioned in another thread by another member.  So nothing you could object to in a pop album, but not a demonstration disc. But if you like Adele then it's a must have.

Indeed. I think I read over on the Hoffman boards that as per usual with Adele, its a rather compressed mix on CD and that the vinyl is the way to go for a more open experience. But yes, she's a pop act, - and is mixed accordingly for playback in cars, bluetooth speakers and cd boomboxes.

Yes, I asked about the SQ. As it seems, it is a standard 21st century product, i.e. For the MP3 army. The rumour above is that the LP will be better. I shall wait and see. It really is a sign of the times that here is is lass who can sing. Granted the songs are not the stuff of legends, but I would like to hear her sing properly. Having spent loads of dosh and years painfully clambering up the black box ladder, it is a shame that purchases have to be dated as current mastering is pish.

My ripped copy is WAV & the individual tracks are all typically normal WAV size  -  38MB to 60MB

I don't find anything wrong with the SQ even tho' I'm not an Adele fan.
