New speakers cables

Posted by: Anto68 on 22 January 2016

Hi all,

I am using a normal speakers cable Monster S16 standard 1 FT and I would like to upgrade it. I want to buy the Nordost White Lightning (here in Italy cost 350 euro). There is someone who know or use these cables?

You think I would get more transparency and better sound quality? Or only an extremely sensitive ear can hear the difference?

I also look forward any suggestions about other cables brands. My music system consists Unitilite, Elac BS 263 loudspeaker, Rel Sub.

Why not NACA5?

Posted on: 22 January 2016 by Anto68

Hi Jon, I also thought NACA5 but the cost (here 50 euro) seems to cheap for to make a real breakthrough compared to my Monster cables.

The A5 is a perfect match for the Unitilite, which I suspect the Nordost will not be. Buying on price is a sure fire way to get it wrong. For an alternative to A5 that definitely works with Naim amps and isn't silly money, I'd suggest looking at Tellurium Q Black.

Anto,  stop kidding yourself,  speaker cables do not make breakthrough's,  they make small changes to sound,  but no way is anything breakthrough.   You are in danger of expecting too much  & wasting money.

Your Unitilite is entry level & I would recommend NACA5 or one of the entry level Chords,  or even keep your Monsters.

Thank's for yours feedback I'll try to follow your suggestions.

Cheers

Yes, why I opened the topic, I was looking for answers to my doubts in order to spend a lot of money for cables. Anyway, Unitilite is an entry level as you claim but for the price (in Naim Brand) and NOT for the value and performance quality.

I have not heard any Elac speakers, but considering everything I have read about them - and more so with a high quality mini like yours is that they are super quick from the special tweeters and unusual bass cones.  I would think they would be a good match with the Nordost White Lightning cables as they would work with the speakers in the sense that all Nordost cables can track fast transients and bring out better transparency.     Although they won't be a good match with the Unilite,  you will need something with more welly.   I would imagine that with some music and aspects of tone will be great but you would notice lower midband sounding exposed and undernourished.

cheers

My dealer had my SuperUniti driving Elac BS314 (cost more than the SU!) at the showroom when I went to grab them. Very exciting but then I was quite excited!

Naca5 should be your 1st port of call. Then try some Chord or Tellurium if you get the chance.

Do not underestimate the quality and musicality of NACA5 due to a relatively  low price.

It really is an excellent cable and value for money.

Hi, I've listened to a few cables on various demonstrations, nac a5 was ok, did the job, but tellurium q black totally outclassed the nac a5, ( in my humble opinion) , even on entry level boxes it's a vast improvement. I've not come across a better cable in that price bracket, alternatively if you want to live dangerously then it's tellurium ultra blacks or super lumina....

In what way did Tellurium Black totally outclass NAC A5.Quite a bold claim.

TQ black gets my vote. A big step up in terms of sound quality. Works superbly with naim separates.

I use NACA5 cryo'd.

Hi, having had opportunity to listen to both sets of cable, to my ears their was a depth of detail, even warmth, that was present in the blacks that wasn't in the nac a5, in fact the dealer had himself moved over from nac a5 to tellurium, which I only became aware of after the dem...

Generally, I would agree with that Mike, but there is one exception. I suspect you know what speaker cable that is.

I feel very helpfull yours opinions. I have the opportunity to test the NACA5 in a dealer close to my home but unfortunately  I can not find any store which can provide me a direct test with the Tellurium Q Black: I can buy them in internet anyway.

Thank you very much for your help.

Depends on what speaker you use of course. I tried TQ Black recently and it was great on the speakers I was trialling but when I put my IBL's back it didn't work at all, sounding thin and shrill almost. The A5 worked much better with the the old Naim speakers balancing it out again. I don't doubt that the TQ is a great choice for many non Naim modern speakers however. My dealer also swears by it.

I'm sure your probably right, nac a5 works well with your older naim speakers, not ever heard the lBL's, I assume they are similar to SBL's?

There's many similarities yes. Probably more like DBL's but without the scale and bass. Very transparent speakers.

Speaker cables make a very noticeable difference to me. I've tried Naca5, several Chord, several Audioquest and some Analysis Plus. In the end I chose the Analysis Plus Black Oval 12 as they bring just the right amount of transparency,  pace, presence and a realistic sound stage - I really enjoy the music with those cables

Here goes....My first post!  2015 was my first year with a Naim System.  Any Super Lumina cable fans?  I consider this upgrade one of the best I've done on my Naim kit.  My S 600's have been taken to an entirely new level!  Speaker Cables do matter, absolutely!  And in all fairness, I upgraded the cartridge on my RP 10 at the same time, so in my case, this jump was more than the cable, but the Super Lumina gave me much more than I expected.  Shout out to my Naim Guru, Connon and the gang @ Tune Hi Fi in Seattle.  THANK YOU for helping me on my Naim journey!

SeattleNaim,

Good news.  And welcome to the forum!
