Can I transfer my ripped files to an iPod?

Posted by: Chris Bell on 01 June 2011

Busy ripping my 1500+ CDs and it occurred to me I'd love to transfer the files to an iPod.  Is this possible or are the ripped files in a unique format?

These are plain ol' WAV files - add to iTunes library and sync.

Excellent... makes all this ripping worth the effort.

Best you start buying a few more iPods ! Pretty sure that iTunes will also import each individual WAV file as a seperate "unknown artist" & "unknown album", in other words a mess. Would be so nice if naim developed an export tool to convert WAV to a meta data friendly format using the info from the servers database or the xml/cddb file information. Sigh....

Unfortunately iTunes isn't very friendly and takes absolutely no notice of the folder structures giving artist and album information ... I've used dbpoweramp to batch convert my collection to MP3's for importing into iTunes.

You will likey land up with the name of the songs but no artist or album inormation

Yes, I was oversimplifying - using some of the scripts at dougscripts.com, it is possible (on the Mac) to set the correct track number, remove the leading number and dash, and set the artist and album based on the folder names. Of course, the degree to which you wish to Involve yourself with this is up to you, but it can be automated very easily.

Would seem a simple task then for someone to release an OFFICAL tool to do it then....I hear that the function is already built in to the Serves to do a dual rip to MP3 but also some hesitation at turning it on...

Better yet would be the function to slect which parts of an existing collection is ripped to alternative format.

So, how would I transfer the WAV files on my Serve to my IMAC?

Turn on SMB on the mac and use it as a store. Or see if it appears under shared in the left hand side of a finder window.

SMB?

You have a couple of options at present:

  • if you desire to utilize the files in full resolution but do not want to use storage space on your computer, de-select the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" option within the iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced tab – then select File -> Add to Library...
  • if you wish to convert the files to MP3 or AAC (recommended) to save space on your portable device, select the appropriate file type under the iTunes -> Preferences -> General -> Import Settings...

Data.

On mac got system preferences and sharing.

Turn on file sharing if it is not then goto options and turn on SMB.

The serve will now scan the mac for music and make it available and also enable you to use the mac as a store.

Like all things computing, this is achievable but not recommended. You will land up with a full up imac harddrive.

Consider investing in a mac and making this a store for the serve. Better NASes have a built in itunes server meaning the same music is available to all itunes in the house

Of course had you stored your files as flac on a Vortexbox based server you could mirror your collection as alac and hey presto - transfer to iPod. Tog

OK, transfer achieved but what a mess. Deleted the lot. I may just pick some of my favourite CDs and copy them onto the IMac and then onto the Nano.  Takes more time but better result (I hope!).
