Which applications do you mostly use to control your UPnP renderer?

Posted by: nbpf on 24 January 2016

The idea of this thread is to collect some feedback on applications that can act as control point for UPnP (DLNA, OpenHome, etc.) renderers.

I am particularly interested in applications which are compatible with different renderers, are well supported and documented and have been ported at least to iOS and Android.

FWIW

Naim app for my NDX and UQ2 Naim renderers.

Denon app for my DBT-3313 and AVR-X4000

Plex app in control point mode for the Plex app in renderer mode on the TV (because the renderer native to Sony TV is a thing of legendary crap).

I use the Naim app on an iPad 2 to control MinimServer, sometimes AssetUPnP, running on a MacBook Pro.  Both are well documented (especially MinimServer) and well supported. If you're into classical music, MinimServer is a lot more flexible. Renderer is a SuperUniti, and everything works very well.

I'm using Kinsky on various iDevices to drive my Melco. Kinky is a bit basic in appearance now but works well for me (and works ok on a very old iPad). I also use Arcam Music Life on my iPhone which is quite a nice control point.

I use Naim app on iPad Pro with Minimserver,  stupidly small artist/track size apart, it's really good.  I also use the MusicCast app for my desktop Yamaha NX-N500 speakers.

If I want to random play the entire NAS I use BubbleUPnP with Minimserver. (Naim app/streamer wont do this, it has a pool of 500 track limit).

I've also used Synology's own app, DS Audio but obviously not with Minimserver.  Also right clicking a music folder on my PC then selecting 'Cast to Device' and you get all your streaming options.  In my case the UQ2 and Yamaha NX-N500.

To me BubbleUPnP is the best control point app on the market, at least for Android. It controls my Muso and Google Chromecast Audio as well as Linn and probably even more. Beyond your NAS it will stream music from Tidal, Qobuz, Google Music and from a cloud drive. Gapless playback is supported. So not much to wish further.

James, do you see the cover art in the uppert left corner of the Kinsky window? Kinsky works quite well both on iOS (iPad mini) and OS X (old iMac) for me, but I have not managed to get the art work displayed in the upper left corner. Server and renderer are Minimserver and upmpdcli. Thanks, nbpf

Thanks for your feedback! Just to make sure I am not missing something: Bubble UPnP is only available for the Android platform, right?

Yep. Running Twonky on the Melco and the cover art is displayed fine in Kinsky (in top left too) on all devices. I've got artwork embedded in the files and as a jpeg in the album folders too so that tends to cover all the UPnP server artwork bases.

Am using Naim app for my main setup, and PlugPlayer on iPhone 5S for headphone listening via Chord Mojo. Both get UPnP service from a QNAP NAS running Asset.

Thanks James, it is probably a problem between upmpdcli and Kinsky. No matter which UPnP server I select, cover art is displayed fine everywhere except in the upper left corner. With Lumin, everything works fine. Best, nbpf

For playing Upnp, +1. Bubble does a number of things better than the android Naim app. Miles more stable, allows hardware button volume control, has a mini widget accessible from the top of screen drop down menu and lock screen, displays now playing artwork on the lock screen, stays connected to the renderer when the Android device goes to sleep. I believe it can also do things like link up with lyric finding software, though I haven't tried it.

Overall far better than the Naim app, which does none of those things and crashes continually for me. But unless I've missed something, Bubble can't control inputs, change settings on the Naim equipment, choose iradio stations and so on. So thus far I've found it a matter of a few pleasant experiments with Bubble, but relying on the Naim app in the end and putting up with its shortcomings.

I use Kinsky, Kazoo and BubbleDS Next

Gives me great control from laptop, phone and tablets

Primarily use Naim app (on iPhone 6+ or iPad Air2) for my UnitiQute, sometimes Linn Kazoo on laptop as alternative.

Lumin app or Linn Kazoo to control Marantz M-CR510 in bedroom. iPeng to control Squeezebox Receiver in the bathroom.

(BubbleUPnPServer to create OpenHome proxy for when using Lumin or Kazoo).

That's correct.

Naim app, controlling Twonky and Asset...

I don't use any app for any renderer.

Eloise, for which UPnP server do you create an OpenHome proxy via BubbleUPnPServer?

I am running 2 instances of Minimserver, one on a Debian system and one on a Raspberry Pi. They both get recognized by Lumin without the need to run BubbleUPnPServer. And they both do not get recognized by Kazoo (4.8.927 for iOS) no matter whether I create an OpenHome proxy via BubbleUPnPServer or not!

Use JRiver Media Center on Raspberry Pi with symbolic-links to the files on Synolgy NAS. JRemote on iPad to control with several custom-views for the libary. JRemote Is now also in PlayStore for Android.
Verry stable and cheap.

Naim-APP only for Tidal with crashes every time I use it...

I use the front panel of my NDX.

I use the built in control - displayed on TV - for my Arcam system.

However, I use MediaMonkey to build playlists so very rarely do I feel a need for a lot of button presses. If MediaMonkey wasn't so flaky as a control point then I would probably use that.

I use Naim app for main system, PlugPlayer for tablet and phone playout and the Sonos app. Media servers I use are Asset, Minimserver (running on their own micro servers -RPi) and a Sonos Connect server

I may have used the wrong (or a different term) for what BubbleUPnPServer does.

I use a single Linux box (VortexBox with stuff added for my own needs) with MinimServer and BubbleUPnPServer.  BubbleUPnPServer sees my two renderers (the Naim and the Marantz) and creates an OpenHome Renderer instance for each.  Just ticked the relevant box and Kazoo then sees them fine.

Its the renderer that needs to be recognised as OpenHome renderer rather than the server by the way.  MinimServer works with OpenHome control points without any additional support from BubbleUPnPServer.  As I recall you use upmpdci with MPd?  I've read elsewhere this works fine with Lumin but doesn't work with Kazoo - I assume Linn's checking is a little stricter.

Thanks for the additional details Eloise! I am indeed using upmpdcli with MPD. I have also tried making upmpdcli an OpenHome renderer with BubbleUPnPServer but still Kazoo does not seem to recognize it. As you mention, there are documented issues with Kazoo and upmpdcli.

But I was hoping that Kazoo would at least recognize Minimserver. It is conceivable that Kazoo first attempts at discovering a renderer and then a server and that, if the first operation fails, it never gets to discover the Minimserver. That would be a little bit bizarre, however. I have anyway openend an issue on the Linn forum.

Thanks to all posters, I very much appreciated your feedback! It looks like many of us are relying on different control point applications and there are still quite severe compatibility problems. Hopefully we will see some convergence and more interoperability and customizability in the next years. Best, nbpf
