What speaker cables do you use?
Posted by: wenger2015 on 25 January 2016
I started with the very basic chord rumor, that was a number of years ago, I didn't appreciate the significance of a real quality cable until quite recently, I am now a true convert of high quality speaker cables and interconnects.
I have since discovered the sublime tellurium ultra black speaker cables, which are exceptional, I know of course with another large sum of cash greater improvement can be made...so my question is what speaker cable do you use and why?
They are not mutually exclusive: the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' saying refers to the avoidance of unnecessary change.
That's very deep for this time of the morning!! I agree completely of course, lol, but in reply to Corry, if you've had your speaker cables for 25 years ...
Just had my morning shot of a double espresso... so all wired up ![]()
I need at least two expresso 's first thing in the morning....generally can't start sounding philosophical until early evening, so fair play to you..I'm impressed

I did have them reterminated a couple of years ago. But now I'm wondering if speaker cable degrades over time, even in the absence of any visible corrosion or mechanical damage.
My ancient (1988-ish) and much-loved CB 250 has been recapped a couple of times. Next time (unless I plump for a DR replacement), I'll inquire about having the speaker outputs replaced - I'm sure the insides of them are in poor shape by now.
Vertere Pulse X mini, factory terminated, 2 x 5 mt. I also have a mint pair of NAC A5, 2 x 5 mt, Naim plugs at both ends, bought from a gentleman here who's very happy with SL, and kept in a box as emergency exit.

I still have a 1975 Pioneer SA 7300, whose pots and switches work flawlessly, and which sounds good. Your 28 years old amp is just a boy..
Sometimes old is just as good as new, but only sometimes!!! Maybe it only works if everything is old?
NACA5 with AV Options deep cryo
I'm now using RA Kimber Monocle-XL 2 x 2.5m
2 times 10 m NACA5. Took me a full day to pull them through my ceiling ducts. No way anybody will get those out again. End of story - peace of mind...
BEN00, Hope their not damaged my friend?
NACA5 of course: 2x9m! Now run-in after 5 months use.
Linn LK20 on the AV system.
I think your in good company with the Nac a5, have you ever considered SL's, seems to be the general upgrade path?
NACA5, I tried a SL interconnect from CDX2/555ps to 282 but it lost the swing (boogie, drive? all related I think if not the same thing to different ears) the SL speaker cable's bananas won't fit between the NBLs and the wall and I don't think there's a spade adaptor for pre ovator Naim speakers so I never tried SLs there.
New to NAIM and m using NACA5 loved it and do t thing I'll change it anytime soon.
Yeti142, how does the cdx2, 555ps combination work? Is it a big improvement on xps?
I thought so when I auditioned it in the Audio Ts demo room, the guy's in the shop didn't think there was that much in it when using it in the showroom but in the demo room it was a different matter, non Dr 555ps vs XPSDR, this with 282/SCDR/250 and Kudos C2 speaker more control and more fun, as long as the system is set up properly, this latter isn't trivial. I bought the year old demo 555ps there and then with the correct burndy for around the same price as a new XPSDR. My thinking was to replace the CDX2 with an NDS but I've never got round to it. NBLs, Transfiguration Proteus, a new 552 and 6 FFFraim shelves have come since so I'm obviously not that set on the streamer, I've run out of vinyl storeage and am eyeing up the CD alcove so it's only a matter of time.
Naca5 for 20 years. Did a real shot out a couple of years where I demoed Vertere, Sarum & Naims then different alternatives for a couple of months before I mind up my mind.
At that time Sarum came out on top with Naca5 second, very different sound, there are (was) some stuff I really liked with Naca5. Tried Naca5 again in the system a month ago and couldn't hardly stand it.
Strange.

It will be interesting to read the experiences of others who have tried this - perhaps on the "CDX2" thread. Having said that, I had a CDX2/XPS2 for several years, then tried a CDS3/XPS2 and a CDX2/555PS. At the time, these 2 options were often considered to be of broadly similar ability but with very different strengths. Both were a distinct step up from the CDX2/XPS2.
In the end, I preferred the CDX2/555PS over the CDS3/XPS2. However, a year later, the CDX2 had to go back to Naim for some TLC and my fiendishly cunning Naim dealer loaned the same CDS3 head unit "to get me by..."
I still have that CDS3 head unit and the 555PS, with no ambition to change. This pretty much captures my views on these CD players & power supplies.
Hope this helps, FT
Very interesting experiences, I've got a cdx2 and I am planning to add an xpsdr sometime soon, but it has crossed my mind to get a 555ps nondr instead of the xpsdr.
I'm heading for the Bristol hi-fi show, so thought I might wait and see if anything turns me on.....because once purchased I'm planning on sticking with it for the foreseeable...this is somewhat of an expensive hobby..
The Nac a5 seems to be like marmite ....you either love it or hate it.....the last demo I had, it was all the dealer had, I found it a little harsh to my ears.....and certainly a long way off Tq or Sl levels....

If it's going to be a long-term investment go for 555PS.
Adam, are you suggesting a 2nd hand 555ps nondr , which at the moment you can probably pick up for a similar price to an xpsdr ? I seemed to get the impression from previous comments , that it was an option that gave the most improvements...
