Unitiserve vs Qnap nas

Posted by: Pallie on 31 January 2016

Anybody did a comparison between these 2. Is there a difference in SQ?

I've got some issues over the time with minim server is the unitiserve more friendly to use?

One more question. Will a unitiserve and a dac v1 and nap100 do the same as a stand alone unitiqute?

Including using the naim app?

I've heard conflicting opinions about which sounds best, Unitiserve or NAS, so I think you need to listen for yourself to decide on this.

Unitiserve/V1 would be controlled with the N-Serve app, not the Naim app. It will give you iRadio as well as playing your own music files, but no Tidal or Spotify.

What issues are you having with Minimserver?

I preferred the sound of Minim running on Synology to the sound of the files being played on the Serve. It's not great, but there is nothing soundwise to suggest it's worth spending £2,400 on a Serve compared to the £400 cost of a nas. The only benefit of the Serve is that you can pop the CDs in the front to rip them, but if they are already ripped this is not really an issue.

Remember that the £2,400 cost of the unnecessary serve plus the sale cost of the Qute virtually gives enough money to get a 272: that really would sound miles better than what you have now. Just a thought.

Nigel. It's more à network problem. I can get à cheap sh uniti.

And those network problems are grrrr.

Nac272 is to much for now.

Always good to hear your opion thanks Nigel.

I'm not sure why you'd want a Uniti. Just get the network problems sorted out. If you want detailed advice, I would start a new thread in Streaming Audio and set out exactly what the issue is.

Nigel maybe better sq and solve my network problems. I get a lot of no network issues.

I recently see a lot of dac vi and unitiserve on the second market. That's why i got interested.

You should not have network problems, & new/different Naim boxes will not solve any network problem.
So lets solve the network first - explain what you have:   wired, wireless, router/make, any wireless extenders & anything else that might be relevant.
What control device do you have, iOS or Android
Also confirm you have Unitiqute-2 & QNAP.

Yes got uq2 en qnap. Wireless works well, but when via powerswitch connected it sees no network.

It all works well until a few weeks. I've got a modem/router technicolor.

Control via iOS, iPhone/ipad.

I don't understand what a "powerswitch" is ?

Ethernet over powerlines (mains) ?

Have you removed the wireless antenna and changed the streamer's settings to ensure that wireless is disabled when changing to EoP. Also does the streamer show in the list of network devices on your router's web interface?

Obviously wired Ethernet is the preferred method for a stable network connection. Is this not possible at all?

Yes ethernet over mains. It worked for à year. Then suddenly it don't.

I guessed Ethernet over Power,  but its hard to be sure with just one line replies.

Pallie,  you need to be more descriptive,
I understand wireless from router to UQ2 but you do not say if this same router to UQ2 is the section you are trying to connect with EoP,   & also how is QNAP is connected to router.
If its worked for a time OK, then its stopped,  that is pretty sure to be one of the EoP units failed.
EoP is not a good solution, it adds a huge ammount of noise & as you have found is unreliable.  Ethernet wire over a complete network is the best (only) solution,  is this not possible.

Mike that isn't possible. I need about 15 meter ethernetcable. NAS is connected to router en switch also connected to router.

Ah-ha   now some more information,  a switch  !!!!
So if I understand  ......
Ethernet between NAS-Switch-Router
Ethernet between Switch-EoP ~~~~~~~ EoP-UQ2

Geen problemen Pallie, ik vermoedde u fransen waren omdat ik wat zien accenten over "e"    ik bezoek elk jaar grave Nederlands mijn vader is in Oosterbeek (Arnhem)

OK, but I don't accept that 15m ethernet is a problem, I installed 25m for a friend last month.   I used a flat form of Cat6 & its easier to install than the round form. If you are serious about hifi then ethernet is the best SQ & most reliable,  maybe something to think about.
The alternatives are to replace the EoP units or maybe think about a wireless extender system to boost & speed up the wireless connection from Switch to UQ2.

Pallie - Before you spend money on network/wifi extenders, have you tried going right back to basics?

Purely for the purposes of finding out what your problem is, put the US in the same room as your NAS, connect it directly to the same switch as the NAS, or even direct to the NAS itself.  Does this solve your problem? If it doesn't it is likely to be a setting (or an issue)  on the UQ.  If it works, its then a case of adding the next link in the chain, maybe the EoP devices etc and just try to identify where the issue is arising.

As to UnitiServe vs NAS - I has agonised over this for a few weeks.  I love the convenience of the US but the way it handles compilations drove me up the wall.  I'm a child of the 80s and have a ton of compilation CDs. Running MinimServer on a QNAP NAS (or indeed any NAS) means I can select an artist and see all the tracks by that artist, regardless of whether they are on a solo or compilation CD.
