HDD failure NS02

Posted by: Dmitry Kudrin on 01 February 2016

Hello. I've got new problem with my NS02 - dead PSU. Ok, I replaced it with the identical PSU but I found out that PSU isn't the only one dead. HDD is faulty too. And this is the problem, I can replace hardware, but what should I do with software? Any suggestions? Fault HDD can not be read, so I can't get the disk image.

I'm not sure where you are, but they can apparently often get data off a failed HDD at Salisbury, so you could talk to them (and for example send them the old HDD even if you don't want to send them the whole unit?).

When my HDX HDD failed a short while ago, the gurus at Naim managed to recover all the music, and transfer it to the new HDD

I'm in Russia. Right now I try to achieve some agreement with local Naim distributors. But in my case when warranty is over I try to check all possibilities to make my device alive. To clarify. I have no user data like music collection on dead HDD. But I can't simply replace HDD with the new one cause NS02 operates with Windows XP core which is placed on the same HDD. So I had the guess that somebody here had the experience of getting image of system disk. Or maybe someone had experience of changing HDD by himself.

Regards.

I suggest you email Naim technical support. They will be able to send you a disc image if anyone can.

I've got he answer from Naim support. It's quite upset me.

The unit will need a replacement drive from Naim – it is not possible to fit an off-the-shelf drive and just reinstall software.

It's gonna take a lot of time, I can try to buy new HDD and write the image if I have it. But I haven't.

Maybe someone here can do the image of master HDD of NS02? I will be very appreciated.

Did you say that you have your music elsewhere? So can you still listen to it? Perhaps the best thing ultimately is to put the music on a nas, get a streamer and sell the NS01. You'll then be able to maintain a nas yourself.

Or cannot Naim send you a new HDD with the software image already on it? I appreciate that this is more difficult as you are in Russia.

I can't sell my NS02 because in my multiroom audio system this is the main source.

About sending the new HDD I try to ask my local dealer. Thanx.

Ok, it's me again.

About my investigation and negotiation to solve the trouble with NS02. Distributors in Russia asked Naim for repair my device and the only opportunity is to buy HDD upgrade kit for 500£.

I found owner of HDX which is similar to NS02, got the image and try to start my NS02 with HDD copied from HDX. Everything works fine except analog audio outputs. No sound at all, seems like HDX got another sound card and the driver is not comaptible with NS02 sound card. Ah! And when I connect to my device using Naim desktop client it is defined as HDX.

Hi Dimitri:  Unfortunately, as you found out, Naim will not provide a software image for your new hard drive (supposedly for "licensing" reasons).  My suggestion is to bite the bullet and get the more reliable SSD upgrade.  Expensive, but the SLC SSD will probably outlast the technology (unlike a mechanical hard drive).
