Powerline priority?

Posted by: thijazi on 06 February 2016

I have a NAC282, SuperCap.DR, DAC-V1, NAPSC and a NAP250.DR system and just got 2 Powerlines on demo to try out. What would you suggest could be the best approach in order of priority to start? eventually I figure I will have all four units (DAC, NAP, NAPSC and SC) on PLs, just not sure in which order, any thoughts?

Worth experimenting but I'd start with the SC and 250.

Pl on the SC and DACV1

or forget the PL and just get a 252 instead

I'd be investigating source upgrades first

Interesting question, I have quite a different setup (555/552/SNAXO/500/300/500) and one Power Line, the rest are powered by a "spider" from Grahams.  I recently moved the PL from the 552 to the SNAXO.  Initially I thought it made a notable difference, but now I am not so sure.  I would be interested to hear the experience of others.

I would, and did, start with the Napsc on the 282.  It gave me a very noticeable and worthwhile performance improvement. The second I'd put on the Supercap.

Ordinarily I'd say you should go with the source first and you should try one with the DAC-V1 and SC but I think you may hear the best difference with the SC and NAP.  It's easy enough to try both combinations.

I have a Powerigel 8 +1 Powerline. Separate sockets on a double unswitched MK dedicated spur socket.

As per Dark Bear's  suggestion put the Powerline on the power amp (300) from the 552 psu.

Not a night and day improvement, but left it in place ( better cable dressing).

Personal experimentation is the only way.

If you're going to fit all four does it really matter?

1. Nap250.DR

2. SuperCap/282

3. DAC-V1

4. NAPSC

I didn't like the power line in the dac v1 and new firmware

sounds better to me without power-line

with the older firmware the power line improved the dac v1

Generally I think a HiLine on the source is required to let PowerLines really shine when added to the system. If only 2 then definately I would put those to the SC and 250. If you had a better source I may be inclined to move the PL from the 250 to the source (such as an nDac or NDX).

I know there are many advocates of putting the PL on the NAPSC. I must be honest and say when I tried it I heard no difference. The NAPSC doesn't power any signal carrying circuits so I wasn't surprised but wanted to test anyway.

Lots of good feedback here, will start with the 250 and SC then try to locate a third PL and hook it up to the DAC to complete the setup. The HiLine is what I suppose would replace the standard Naim cable connecting the DAC-V1 to NAC282 (I wish there was a guide to the Naim naming conventions ) so this would be the next quest for audio nirvana.

Thanks all for your feedback.

Cheers..
