Sticky n-Stream app - hair tearing!

Posted by: eagle3333 on 07 February 2016

My n-Stream app (nd5xs) has always constantly frozen when trying to scroll on ipad. Sometime a slow swipe results in a scroll; sometimes not. And then it scrolls seconds later. Tapping on tracks sometimes needs many taps of a different nature until it finally actions. Same for play/pause - sometimes works immediately; sometimes works a few seconds later. It's like slooow wifi. Tearing my hair out. I downloaded the Kinsky app and absolutely no issues at all so it's not the iPad or the connection. But I prefer functionality of nStream. Any thoughts before I go bald, anyone?

Do you really mean n-Stream ??  that was the old "olive" app.
Its now just called "Naim" in the Apple App Store.
The latest version is 4.8 - 11851  & it works perfectly on my iPad (iOS 9.2.1)

Hmm well this was the app towards which I was directed when I nought the ND5 in 2013. Just went to the app store and the 'naim' app gives me only the 'update' option. Clicking it prompts 'do you want to d/load an older version of this app?' Which suggests I'm on current version. Except the icon on my iPad reads 'n-Stream'..

I'd suggest you update to the latest firmware (you'll find it under downloads on the product's page of the Naim website) and then install the latest app on your iPad. The two work so much better together than the older firmware and app from a couple of years ago.

The icon on my iPad reads "naim" (lower case),  its a black icon & has the new white Naim logo.
If you've not updated since 2013,  you are very far away from the latest version & it will for sure be the old n-Stream.
I'm doubly convinced of that as the App Store is asking do you want to get an older version.
With the app open, do you have a gearwheel in top right corner ??
Can you change style colours ?? if no, its n-Stream
I suggest you delete what you have & download the version thats in the App Store.  Then keep an eye on this forum & the app store as new versions come along every few months

And a BIG +1 for HungryHalibut to upgrade to the latest ND5 firmware.   That too gets updated on a regular basis.

Hi,

i have similar issues with an old version of n-stream (yes n-stream) running on an old iPod touch,  that does not support a version of iOS which is required for the new naim app.   No such problems with devices running newer iOS and the new naim app.

The result is that the iPod is rarely used to control the naim system.

what version of iOS is running on the iPad?

Thanks Everyone. David, yes I just realised it's an older v of iOS on the iPad - which I'm updating now. I've unloaded nStream and when the iOS update is done will d/load the current app and then expect all to be tickety-boo. Can't wait for smooth operation!

If your streamer firmware is of a similar vintage to the N-Stream app, you should, as HH says, update that too. It's a bit of a faff doing it for the first time, but some features on the new app won't work on old firmware, and you might even hear a small improvement in sound quality.

Thanks again to all. After much faffing I managed to update the iPad iOS. Then d/loaded 'naim' app and all is now very good. I updated the ND5 s/ware last week. My dealer told me it's solely for functionality and doesn't affect SQ. Don't shoot the messenger!

Consider yourself shot  ...........  & tell your dealer to get a hearing test

Well there's dealers, and then again there's "dealers". Perhaps a lesson learned in this experience?

And a new firmware is imminent which may increase SQ further. We can discuss why when it's released.

Update - I emailed Naim. They say their s/ware updates can affect SQ 'but only for the better.' So there we are. Now you really don't need to shoot the messenger! I enquired because, after update, my SQ lost its warmth, went hard and high in the trebles and has become painful to listen to. I'like to retrograde and check the difference.

Strange,  myself & numbers of others on the forum have been beta testing the firmware for well over a year.  We have had up & downs, but we are more or less positive that what we have now is as good or equal to the best its been.  For sure I don't recognise what you are reporting,  only this last weekend a friend who has not heard my system for a while commented on the detail, realism & the smoothness in all aspects of SQ.

But as Simon-in-Suffolk posted, new firmware is due to be released in the near future,  so why not hold off until then.
