Questions for Naim during visit

Posted by: Graham Clarke on 08 February 2016

I'm off to Naim HQ on Wednesday to have a look at how they manufacture Statement and hopefully the Super Lumina cables too.

Anyone have any good questions that you'd like me to ask whilst there?  I'll take the best few questions with me and see if I can get answers to relay back to the forum.

Great post Graham and everyone. Very interesting, I've never been on a factory tour, one day hopefully.

In fact Graham maybe you could organise a "Forum Visit", you could be The Voice...see what i did........

Sorry, Graham I will get over this..in time!!!!!!

Sounds a fantastic visit and you got loads out of it.

My dealer isn't keen to arrange a visit for his customers - says that it would be a logistical nightmare as most customers are 'time poor' (busy), and it's simply not worth doing.  A great shame, as I'd love a visit.  I'll make do with reading reports like yours and looking at the photos that Forum members have taken on their trips.

The Voice continues to sound just fine through the S1

Graham,

Glad you enjoyed - I likewise had a brilliant time when I went.  Did you get a listening session in their dem room and if so what configuration?

Regardfs,

Lindsay

PS:  If I remember rightly Naim organised a day for Forum members a fews years back with a pub lunch and live music.  Would be good......

Yes, spent probably just over an hour in their listening room.  Could have spent more if we wanted (they seemed in no hurry) but we had a long journey home and wanted to avoid the worst of the rush hour traffic.

We had our pick of the configuration given it was just the two of us.  So we listened to NDS/555, S1 pre, NAP 300 into passive S600s.  That's the closest passive configuration to my active set up.  We then switched out the 300 for the Statement monoblocks as I was curious as to how much better it would sound.  The answer was "a lot".

We then listened to Muso vs. Muso Qb.

One tip - if doing a factory visit, remember to take some music you know well on a USB stick.  So we got to listen to tracks we knew well.

Yes  Lindsay, and a great day it was! I'm sure Naim would be delighted to lay on another one...

Unfortunately the" Grand Organiser" is no longer about these hallowed halls.

I'd change my dealer if he/she couldn't be arsed to even try to arrange a tour, and more importantly for using the phrase "time poor".

Do you speak bollox?

What an excellent idea! I'm sure they'll agree it is also.

It is a heck of a long way away from me but I would love to visit.  Enjoy!

Hey Tony, your hint's a little subtle there, maybe you should clarify?

Power Spec's on 250 DR:

Article by Andrew Everard.

"Power output (<1% THD, 8/4ohm) 92W / 160W Dynamic power (<1% THD, 8/4/2/1ohm) 93W / 163W / 265W / 345W"

I must admit, never been high on spec's, but I seem to remember back in the day, a gentleman  explaining to get an 10 watt amplifier to sound twice as loud, one would need to icrease the the wattage by ten fold.

Point being, 500/300/250,relatively being in the same ball park @ 140, 90, and 80 watts.

But 700 + watts into 8 ohms and a 9K watts burst into 1 ohm,  compared to 345 watts of dynamic power into a 1 ohm load with the 250 DR.

Wellllll... Is time for another Upgrade Graham, sell All the extra SL Interconnects and Speaker Cable associated with an Active System. Sell the Snaxo and 300's, and guess what you're not that far from those Statement Mono Blocks! LOL.

Enjoy your gear!
