NAC52

Posted by: Fredster on 08 February 2016

Hi, just wondering what my chances are of finding a NAC52 for sale without a Supercap. Is that going to be difficult since most seem to be sold as a set.

Hi Fred
Best to check with someone like Tom Tom or other Naim dealers, as they do sell the NAC52 separately.  Some prefer the 52PS, some the Supercap, others the Supercap DR with their 52.

Otherwise, they do come up on the well known fleabay type auction sites but caveat emptor really applies with buying one via this route.

I bought mine from my Naim dealer.

Hope this helps, FT

I got mine from a dealer having separately bought a supercap previously

So is a NAC52 PS different to a Supercap ? I assumed it was the same thing.

So a Supercap is more flexible, but in terms of pairing with a NAC52, does the dedicated 52PS beat a Supercap ?

Jon Honeyball rates a 52PS above a Supercap on a 52.  Apparently it has twice the size of smoothing capacitors, though what else changed with the introduction of the Supercap, I do not know.

But the Supercap is more flexible.

So I guess I should look at the Supercap as an upgrade for one of my Hicaps.......   is that a major or minor step up ?

They do come up sometimes; worth checking fleabay from time to time - there are a number of dealers with accounts there, a couple of whom seem to deal in quite a bit of Naim stuff. Other well known hifi forums allow members to advertise items for sale - these will sometimes show up on search engines. Well known Naim dealers (like Tom Tom and Cymbisosis) also px them from time to time.  My observation is that they are quite often advertised without a power supply - so that would be your next job.

It's worth the search if you're staying Olive because for what is relatively small money they give fabulous performance - particularly if you invest in a service and a POTS8 upgrade.

Happy hunting!

In my experience using DR powersupplies it was a minor step with the 282... and even perhaps even a slight retrograde step. Apparently with non DR powersupplies the SuperCap benefit was significant, although I never heard a non DR SuperCap on my 282.. the non DR HiCap is quite a step down from the DR HiCap (IMO)

That's a question best answered by listening to the effect of each in turn.  The answer is unequivocal and usually accompanied by expletives, such as "holy c..."

Indeed Simon it is your experience that makes me hesitant to upgrade HCDR to SCDR for my 282, as I have understood and agreed with each of your views on the forum (other than 552 !)

Having said that you also did say 252/SCDR is quite a bit better than 282/HCDR.

"holy c..."  That's not the sort of language we expect from our esteemed moderator.

Analog I came across a moderately new SuperCapDR at a price I couldn't resist from a member of this parish... I did not have my 252 at that time - but I was enjoying my 282. Once brought home I feverishly connected up (I bought new SNAICSs) and let it settle in - and settle in and settle in... but despite several weeks of settling in there was something missing for me. I thought I was being silly - this forum can be quite brainwashing sometimes... I fiddled about with the SNAICs etc..  but after a while I went back to the HiCapDR - yes there was perhaps a little coarsness introduced but I preferred the overall effect.

My SuperCapDR stayed on the rack disconnected until my 252 came along....

Maybe there was more than one of them?

Nothing to do with spelling or number of letters, it's just an ellipsis.

OK... (That's an aposiopesis).

He's a real stickler for correct punctuation; it was three dots and a full stop.
