Rack positioning

Posted by: Finkfan on 08 February 2016

When my new 'office' is finished, my hifi will move there soon after. As the new room is a blank canvase I can have the dedicated mains for the hifi in any location.

My question is where is best for the boxes? Centre or off to one side?

What speakers will you use? I ask as IME boundary speakers work best with the system to the side. If using speakers away from the back wall and in front of a centrally positioned system it works just as well as the system off to one side...... if you get my drift.

Basically, try to get the system off to the side, or even better on the side wall if possible. You need to think about how the room is arranged - Windows and doors etc. Do you want to stare at the system? Do you want to stare at a blank wall with just speakers? Will there be a fireplace? Will the speakers be by the window so you can look at the view, etc, etc.

Good points HH.

I'll be using my current speakers which are Revel F206. No fireplace but planning a big screen at some point. Width of the room is 2.5m. Length is 6m. Window at one end on a short wall. Another half way down the long side. Door in between, also on the long side. Was thinking of putting the speakers on the other short wall.

My system is central in the room and just above the rack is a nice painting of a New York scene.  It helps to create a nice relaxing ambiance when listening to Diana Krall.  Not having to stare at the system rack.

Sounds nice staffy!

I just looked at your profile and you appear to have a two box system which shouldn't be hard to place. Just position where it looks best in the room.

Since I control my Naim kit by IOS app, I don't need to use remote controls and so can put the stack anywhere. In my current sitting room setup, the stack is in a side room and so somewhat isolated from the sound coming out of the loudspeakers, which seems like a good thing. Don't know whether that approach would work for you......

Hi Steve. Yeah. Making a few changes to the system this year. Changing to SN very soon and saving for an XPS DR for the CDX2. Looking for decent rack too.

Hi finkfan, maybe your rack placement will depend on length of your speaker cables? It could  possibly be a good time to upgrade your cables...

Thanks David. Unfortunately that's not an option for me. Plus I think I'd miss seeing those big beautiful boxes

Ah very true Wenger! Rack position would dictate which cables I could get!
