FAN ISSUE, never heard before! Fan runs at 120MPH, almost blowing you down at times! HELP!
Paramaters : HDX, running 1.7b, and have been running this almost from release date, w/o issue.
In fact, unit runs fine. Out of the wild blue, about 2 weeks ago, I shut unit, to place in standby mode after listening session of maybe 2-3 hours, and fan seems to go into hyper mode...which I don't think it ever did before. (Unit has never been in an enclosed space, always 100% totally open). I recently turned my unit
180 degrees to see back panel, so when the fan spun up, and I am sitting about 5 feet away on the couch, I realized papers were blowing at the same time I heard the annoyance of a 60 dB fan! I waited, waited, waited, and finally, fan sort of spun down, but not off. After about 10 minutes, i shut unit off with the
rear switch. The front screen didn't show any activity, to sort of indicate that unit was off, but in fact it wasn't. Sort of like a computer reboot, that is just hanging. The box was ice cold after 10 minutes, yet fan remained. Repeat this scenario 2 more sessions...but I just shut fan, by switching rear O/I .
Fast forward to early this morning. Unit is is standby mode ( or so I thought!), and out of nowhere, the fan
spins up, at seemingly bearing breaking speed for about 5 minutes, then moves to another speed for another 5 minutes, and then slows to a crawl, but remains on.
Time for hard switch shut !
I turn unit on today, about 2 hours later:
Systems Info screen:
TEMPERATURE
HD 29
Processor 19
Arm Processor 33
Near HD 31
Fan speed ZERO !
So unit is reading a file from NAS, playing perfectly, Internal HD temps are normal
and fan isn't spinning. Sounds like a computer coding issue ??? Either unit is hanging up & not completely shutting down, or something became corrupted. If thermostat regulator in fan connection,
why would fan come on about 24 hours after last use of machine ?
Thoughts, comments, ideas ?
Thank you !

Hi Audiosavant
Not sure why your fan would have come on and in that situation a power cycle is the right action. But from what you say, I'm not sure that you were doing it the correct way. It is very important that you shut the HDX down properly, which isn't just by turning the switch on the back to off. You must shut it down via the shutdown key on the remote or by pressing and holding the shutdown button the front panel for a couple of seconds. The shutdown button light will flash until it has finished. Then you turn the switch on the back off. To turn it in again you just turn on the switch on the back.
The reason for this is that the HDX has an embedded Windows xp computer in it and if you just switch it off from the back panel, it's like just pulling the plug on a PC. You can get disc errors that may eventually stop it from restarting properly, which means a trip back to Salisbury to get it sorted.
Again I'm not whether this is relevant to your fan issue, but anyway I hope it's helpful.
best

Not sure if that is an issue .
In my raid unit , with one WD red 2tb
And one seagate the monitor
Temps are typically 37 & 40
Respectfully , during use with
HDX . ( good example of why
Next drive is WD )
Sent from my phone, please excuse me , but I will properly respond when I am back in the office .

Hi Audiosavant,
I think I have the same issue with my HDX fan: when shutting down the unit, the fan seems to start running at maximum speed and won't stop until I switch of the HDX from the back panel.
However, I'm not worried about this since I leave the HDX up and running 24/7. For the time being, I choose to keep it this way and bring it in for repair combined with a hard drive upgrade or conversion to SSD :-)
Many regards,
Michel

Don’t know if that is a solution, or more of an acceptance of a not if, but when the unit will fail, I’ll fix it, which is hopefully not before
I swap out my drives. I am unfortunately in the same boat. I would love to figure out how to burn the ISO file of the OS from the HDX onto a
USB key, or new drive, and swap drives myself. Naim says it is impossible, but if they can burn the ISO, so can we! PS: Using a Samsung EVO 850
500MB within my BRYSTON BDP2, and in tests it is SO MUCH faster than a normal 3.5” drive it is shocking.

Hi.
I had the same problem with the fan, never stopped.
But then the internal power supply blow the mainfuse in my house.
After the visit to Salisbury the fan is out of work, the unit never get so warm.
