Draw on CD5 XS

Posted by: nimrodmr2p on 13 February 2016

I have today upgraded from a CD5i to a CD5 XS

Both have the same type of drawer but I have noticed a small irritation

When I open the drawer on the 5i it is quite firm but stays exactly where I pull it to

However with the XS it opens more easily but when I let go it recoils in a little, this makes it less easy to place a disc and there is a risk of catching the disc on the front plate

Any comments or ideas?

Could be to do with the little magnets in the open and close actuators, maybe a demagnetising and burn in cd was used too often !

i have a CD5XS too..

i notice the same but no problem in operations at all..

and i am not much worried - the sound is very good for me and what i can afford right now.

enjoy it !

Have you ensured that the support surface of the machine is level?

John.

Thanks for the comments so far

The machine is level and in the same position as the 5i was placed

I am not sure I understand the comment about the open and close actuators?

I regard this as an unacceptable feature, having to hold the drawer fully open with one hand whilst placing a disc with the other

This player has been purchase second hand but is less than 3 months old

I wonder can it be adjusted, will it improve with use, is it necessary to return it to Naim?

It sounds to me like the 'ribbon connector' used to connect the arm to the circuit board. Absolutely nothing to worry about. With time and use it may soften up a bit and stop pulling the arm back in

My CDX2.2 has the same 'problem' -  irritating a bit, but who cares...

I wondered about the ribbon connector creating some sort of tension

Perhaps it may ease with time?

I may seek an opinion from Naim during the coming week

Most importantly I am hearing significantly more detail which is what the exercise was all about!!

I just noticed another idiosyncrasy

The front of my new CD5 XS has a very 'black' brushed finish

The accompanying Nait 5 XS that is a couple years older is a distinctly 'blue black'

I have only discovered this in bright sunlight

Nimrod, it's almost certainly down to the ribbon connector.  When fresh it can pull the drawer back slightly when you try to open up the drawer all the way.

As for the slightly "blacker" anodised finish, I've recently noticed this too.  Possibly down to a new supplier or necessary change in process?  I keep meaning to ask someone at Naim but more important stuff always seems to take priority.

Drawer on my CD5Si is pulled back a little too when it is opened all the way. Never worried about this.

Thanks Richard

I will persevere with the drawer and see if it improves

I have already caught one CD this morning!!

With the amazing increase in detail I don't want to go back to the CD5i if it can be helped

Perhaps if you balanced on one leg and held the drawer open with your other knee, you wouldn't keep catching the CDs on the front.

Best thing is hire someone to change the cd over, I'm sure for the cost of an upgrade you could get someone to sit in the corner of the listening room and obey your every command, they could even double up and make the coffee .....
