A Nac272 with a mind of its own

Posted by: Belfast Taxman on 16 February 2016

Had my 272 for almost a month now and last week I added a Stageline line input via the DIN (which may have nothing to do with things). Today, and totally out of the blue, the 272 repeatedly goes into Mute mode without me telling it to. This, so far, only happens with the Analogue 1 (the DIN phono input) in operation.

Before I revert to my dealer, any suggestions as to what the cause is and what can be done about it.

That's weird! I'd ask your dealer to have a word with Naim.

Funnily enough, mine does that too! It did it for a while after I got it (last September) then it didn't for ages and then there was a brief period in the new year, but it's been ok ever since. I've blamed all sorts of things: my Harmony Ultimate remote, energy saving bulbs, all sorts. I don't have a phono stage to blame though.

It also seems to be input dependent and can happen on CD, AV or UPnP - it has even happened when I've been listening to music a couple of times but generally just does it when it's not being used so it is often muted when you come to use it. However, since I find this a lot less disturbing than being parted from it for several weeks I have never even mentioned it to anyone. Until now...

I don't want to say that mine's never done that, in case I tempt fate. I only ever use the upnp input, other than FM, which is inside. There seems no logic as to why it only does it on the analogue 1 input. This muting thing is normally due to another remote using the same remote channel.

There is a sequence of buttons on the remote that one can press to reassign that channel but - not very helpfully - I don't remember it...

Are you sure you aren't 'swiping' the logo and activating the mute?

mine doesn't do what you describe.

If you search the forum with "Different IR codes for different NAIM components" the thread has an answer from Steve Hopkins with full details of code changes for the Uniti remote (which is what the NAC N272 uses).

But since these are IR codes, changing the 272 code will only help with remotes within visual range and presumably the OP has already discounted other remotes that the 272 might see. I doubt that non-IR remotes could cause a problem......

I can only add I have a phono stage in the same input as yours and I have not had this issue you describe, mine is now 7/8 months old.

I would speak to your dealer and get it checked out as it would appear to be a possible  fault, hope you soon get the problem sorted.

My 272 is fine, but I just had a Qute 2 come back from repair at naim (thanks for this, naim!): the Qute 2 sometimes spontaneously cranked up to max. volume! Astoundingly, my B&W CM5, and later 805D, survived this attack at my eardrums!

It looks that  the mute sensor in your 272 is to blame - have it looked at before it get worse!

Most likely a faulty logo. get in touch with your dealer, they should be able to replace it.

Semi apologies for resurrecting this thread, but after some weeks with no problem, my 272 started playing up again. So I rang Naim for their perspective and indeed a faulty logo was suggested as the problem and back to dealer was their first advice, but when I asked how precisely the logo might be faulty, it was suggested that they can get stuck in a sort of halfway house between mute and unmute. The chap I spoke to then said that a firm push to mute and unmute might help. Two hours later of solid use and, crossed fingers, no problems.

hope this helps anyone with such an independently minded 272!

How interesting - it's one to remember.
