NAP 250.2 DR Upgrade

Posted by: mackb3 on 19 February 2016

Interested to hear from North American Naimies that have upgraded their NAP-250.2 to DR via Audio Plus Services (still under warranty) or AV Options? If so how long did it take...costs and were the sonic results worth it?

Regards,

Mackb3,  I am on the wait list for the 250DR upgrade at AVOptions.  I am waiting for their notification to ship my amp, pending the arrival of the upgrade kits from the factory (expected late February).  This should be any day now...

Ask them directly via email.

Thanks Charlie, I guess the market for this is limited in the US for now. So your 250.2 must be beyond the 5 year extended warranty period thus AV Options is your avenue. I think many in the UK have taken the plunge with satisfactory results In performance.

Mackb3,

My amp is two years old.  (It was used by Naim in their room at the 2014 CES in Las Vegas).  I would like Chris West to do the upgrade.

Wow! Bought an amp that was used in Vegas. I might want to know the provenance on that one - or maybe I wouldn't. As they say "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". Lord only knows what Chris might find inside when he opens it up .

Actually, your amp sounded wonderful when I heard it Charlie. Should only get better with the upgrade. BTW - I owe you a phone call.

CharlieP,

My 250.2 is just over 2 years old an I too would like to go through Chris as well. Please post your findings after the upgrade.

Mackb3, will do.  May be a month or more.  I dont know what the demand will be, but one can reserve a place in line with a deposit.  I was told I am first in line.

Odd how we so often aspire to "more wonderful."

Update:

I am waiting patiently, as the 250DR upgrade kits from Naim are not expected until perhaps late March.   According to Manu, the first shipment of kits will be "small.'  But then, perhaps demand for them is low, or there would be more posts to this thread.

Back in the UK my dealer expected Naim to be ready to give the OK for my 250 to be DRed 3 weeks ago. So far nothing. There is a suspicion that the demand is far greater than anticipated and kits are thin on the ground.

I guess patience is the way forward.

I'm in NZ.

My dealer said the kits won't be shipped until April.

He added Naim sales are up 25% so perhaps any delays might be explained by this.

Well if the reason is that the factory is swamped with business - that would certainly be a good thing.  Now, if only the prices could drop with higher volume...

In any case, I am sure it will be worth the wait for the DR upgrade.  For me. this delay is a blessing in disguise.  I recently bought an olive supercap for my 282 and shipped it to Chris West for recap.  It is due back to me later this week, and I will get to listen to it settle in before I ship off the 250.  We are fortunate that Naim offer these opportunities to renew and upgrade our existing products, even after 20 or more years (in the case of my Supercap).  Thank you Naim!

Well, here we are in late April, and I am told the first kits will ship to The USA in early May.  I have seen reports from the UK about 300's and 500's being upgraded.  Not sure if anyone on the planet has had 250 upgraded to DR?  In any case, reports about these new DR amplifiers indicate the upgrade is well worth the wait and the money.  I cannot recall when there has been this much enthusiasm for a new product(s).

Hi Allante, the Olive range can't. Be DR'd.

Just bear in mind you may be on the list for a while. I went on the DR list on the first day Naim opened the book on it and am still waiting. I checked last week and no they had not forgotten but have an exceptional high servicing workload and regret that they could not even give an approximate time in days, weeks or months when my serial number might come up for a DR upgrade slot.

Is the wait time correlated with one's dealer? I put my name on my dealer's list back in November (or October?) and my unit was called for in February and back with me 3 weeks later. 3 very long weeks, though!

Posted on: 26 April 2016 by feeling_zen

Possibly. Naim gave my dealer a specific date of March 17th before which they would not accept any serial numbers for DRing from them. Not sure how it is decided. They are a well respected dealer that have been doing Naim since day 1.

not sure if Naim is making any money at all from these DR upgrades, it is very commendable they are upgrading these at reasonable prices.

Trust me on this one Analog, they're making buckets of Money!

quotes from Review on 250DR

""The result is a power supply Naim claims is 30 times quieter than that of the previous NAP 250, with separate supplies used for each channel in the NAP 250 DR, as in the NAP 300 DR and NAP 500 DR.

What immediately became evident was the additional clarity the NAP 250 DR brings to the party, while still maintaining that punchy, explicit and vibrant NAP 250 sound.

Power output (<1% THD, 8/4ohm) 92W / 160W  (Increase in Power)

Conclusion:

The gains may initially seem minimal when compared with the model it replaces, but once the NAP 250 DR’s qualities start to grow on the listener, I suspect there’ll be no going back.""
