Why would upgrading a preamp cause more tweeter hiss?

Posted by: awn on 23 February 2016

I recently upgraded my pre from a 152x to a nac202 and in doing so, notice a lot more tweeter hiss. There was always a little which is normal, but now I can hear it from the listening spot. It doesn't really bother me as I know its normal, but I was just wondering if anyone knows why switching to this preamp would cause this? TIA

Suggestion of 85dB speakers was after a quick search suggesting Jet output was 90 or 91, but i only googled the tweeters not your speakers, and tweeters may be attenuated (...or not?)

hopefully new speakers will end the issue, making the hiss inaudible!

Well I finally got around to trying out another pair of speakers. Totems, no change. It is definitely not an imbalance issue with my tweeters. This thing is just plain noisy.

Well ... after reading through a wack of posts on this forum relating to this issue, I feel a bit better knowing that I do not have a defective piece of gear anyways (which of course is always our main concern). I can live with it otherwise, in exchange for the awesome SQ. There are posts of people who have hiss heard from 10 feet away with naim amps on this forum. Well at 10 feet, I would really have to strain to hear mine, so I guess it is within acceptable limits.

I feel bad for you that you are having this experience despite deciding it is acceptable. And I see you have the other thread about the tracking issue on the volume pots at low levels. The combination of issues is a concern. While both of these issues are common to Naim it is a matter of degrees and you seem to have the more extreme symptoms.

I worked in the trade for years in the 90s at a Naim dealer and cannot count the number of Naim setups that went through the dem room in that time. There is a certain familiarity with the idiosyncracies of various bits of equipment that gets acquired and that includes hiss, gain bumps, balance offsets etc. But never once did I come across hiss that could be heard from listening position (no matter how much you tweaked your bat ears) let alone 10 feet away. Similarly, in all the Naim preamps that I set up was a tracking issue noticeable on more than the first minute couple of degrees of rotation. Still hearing this at 8 O'clock would not be acceptable.

I would urge you to at least engage with Naim support and describe both issues together in as much detail as possible. Including the ranges both the issues are noticeable in and the ambient room noise (I've not yet come across anyone with a perfectly soundproofed chamber - which could chang everything I suppose). Making sure your listening position is not in an acoustic hotspot is also important. Every room has at least one spot that acts as a natural amplifier that (very) noticeably changes what can be heard as your head moves in and out of that acoustic bubble.

As knowledgeable as the collective forum is we don't know everything. There comes a point where seeking expert advice is the better option.

Thanks for that advice feeling zen. I guess it is just my luck that I get the extreme of both issues. I am still trying to decide what to do as I know I will be changing some other components in the very near future (one of which will be my speakers). I will also be talking to my dealer more and to naim as well to hopefully guide me in the best direction. Thanks again.

Just an update .. I sent my 202 back and got a new one. Exact same hiss, so I wont worry about that anymore, its normal. ... but the best part ... no more balance issues! ... .. night and day difference between this unit and the other one.
