Recommended upgrade 122x or 152X?
Posted by: Sam A on 24 February 2016
Hello Everyone
New to the forum, so excuse me if this is has been done before.
I've currently got a Naim AV2 and 2 x Nap 150X. I only use it for 2 channel listening. I understand that the AV2 is not the best option for this set up, so I was looking for help as to the best way to upgrade.
I would like to use the 2 Nap 150x in a bi amp config and wanted your advice on which pre amp to pair with them. I would also look to adding a flatcap in the near future.
My main source components are a Rega RP3 and a Sonos connect at the moment.
The speakers are a pair of PMC Twenty 21's.
I know it is all subjective to peoples personal preference, but any advice you may have would be great.
Thanks
Sam A
Given the Rega and Sonos will be around for a while, a 152 or 122 might be the best bet. The 152 is a bit better I believe, but either would be good. I used a 122x, Flatcap 2x and 150x for about three years and they were super.
I can't tell you about the spec differences, except that the 152XS can take both outputs from a FC giving it a higher level of finesse. It's also a later design than the 122X and the 202
I have only heard a 152XS briefly at my dealers, without a FC and with a NAP155XS (so, the update of yours) into a pair of Neat speakers. Can't remember the source but I don't think it was exotic. My opinion was that preamp wise the 152XS is probably one of the biggest Naim bargains at the moment. The odd thing is that it get so little mention here, though I notice that those who have them are happy. Maybe that's it, we only here from the permanently unsettled!
Just an opinion.

Just as a thought. With a flatcap in place could I send the signal from the AV2 to it and then use 2 outputs to each Nap 150 and bi amp. I know we've had the whole no benefit to bi amping but I wanted to get full use of what I have got for a while and then get onto a sensible upgrade path if monies allow.
So an update. I am know the proud owner of a 122x/fc2x/150x setup and I can't believe the quality of the system. Every thing from the reproduction of the sound to how they look as a matched system. In comparison to what I had it is like day and night.
Congrats Sam, that's what it's all about.
Chris
Thanks Chris
Just got to sort my source components out now.
Did you keep the AV2. Since you already had it, it is a very cost effective DAC into the NAP. Nick
I have still got the AV2 but planing to sell it to pay for the upgrade. Would you recommend using it as a connection to the 122x?
Before you sell the AV2, you should try connecting it to the 122 and using it as a DAC for the Sonos. Compare vs Sonos directly into the 122. I predict you will want to keep the AV2 after all; or you might replace it with a different DAC, like Naim DAC or Hugo DAC. Keeping the AV2 might be best value for the money, of these options -- depends what the going rates are.
Good luck.
Nick
In this config, I would use fixed-level output from the AV2 into the 122 with Unity Gain turned OFF. That way, the Volume is always controlled at the 122, not at the AV2. Unity Gain ON is only appropriate in AV/hifi setups with more than two speakers.
Is the unity gain turned off at the AV2?
Has anybody had any experience with the Denon DA-300USB DAC into a Naim system?
No. UG/AV Bypass is set on the NAC. OFF is default/normal. ON is special case when you convert e.g. a Naim 2.0 system to 5.1 thru a NAC.
UG lets you control all of the five speakers from the AV2 for 5.1 sources. Not your scenario.
cd5x + 122x/fc2x/150x driving Totem Hawks was my system for 4 years. A very good system that got much better when i replaced 150x with 200 (speakers needed the additional power). I could stay with this system for a lifetime and save many thousands euro...
Hi all.
Just a quick question. What is the correct Narcom remote for the 122x? The one that came with the unit only seems to control the volume.
Thanks
Which one do you have? Any of the Narcom remotes should be fine with the NAC122x. IIRC it came first with the Narcom 2, then Narcom 3.
Have you pressed the correct soft key to give you pre-amp functions?
Hi Richard
I'm not sure which one came with the unit.
It's description is a dark grey handset with light grey inset and Naim logo at the bottom. Volume keys are green and it has 4 source keys at the top CD, TUNER, PREAMP and RECORD.
As I say volume control seems fine but I can seem to switch source.
I suspect it's this..

If so, it will only change volume and balance. You can't use it it to change source. This remote was supplied with earlier amplifiers I believe. If you get hold of the later Narcom 4 I think you can change source with it.
That's the one. I will get hold of a new Narcom 4 and see if that does the trick.
Thanks
